Who you are
- Professional experience as a software engineer is required
- Bachelor’s or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or similar degree
- Strong experience with Linux, OpenStack, Kubernetes or other cloud technologies
- Strong development-level experience with Python, Go, C, C++ on Linux
- Ability to troubleshoot with gdb and other tools
- Familiarity with git source code repositories and branches
- Upstream involvement with patches accepted in open source projects
- You love technology and working with brilliant people
- You are curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable
- You value soft skills and are passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated
- You have a Bachelor’s or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or similar degree
- You have interest and experience with two or more of the following: Ubuntu Linux - kernel or userspace, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Python, Go, C, Postgresql, Mongo, Debian packaging, scalable web services

What the job involves
- You will help with troubleshooting and driving issues to resolution by with workarounds, guidance, and fixes to be released upstream and in Ubuntu
- Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
- Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's support teams
- Work closely with Ubuntu Platform Engineering
- Analyse and participate in upstream development
- Develop fixes, backport patches, and work with upstream for inclusion
- Demonstrate good judgement in technical methods and techniques
- Prioritise work and manage your time effectively against those priorities
- Participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
- Maintain clear, technical and concise communications
- Travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events and conferences
- Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
- Write high quality code to create new features
- Debug issues and produce high quality code to fix them
- Review code produced by other engineers
- Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
- Work from home with global travel 2 to 4 weeks for internal and external events

Canonical originally started as a company to help distribute Ubuntu (an operating system based on Linux). It is now a leader in delivering open source to the world quickly, securely and cost effectively.
With a community of 200,000, Canonical publishes an operating system which runs from the tiny connected devices up to the world's biggest mainframes, the platform that everybody uses on the public cloud, and the workstation experience of the world's most productive developers. Just some of its partners include Microsoft, HP, Dell, aws, and Intel.
The founder has highlighted that Canonical's biggest challenge has been that demand is bigger than the company’s ability to service it. Originally a not-for-profit, Canonical is now monetising and is planning to go public. It also announced its product Ubuntu has a comprehensive subscription version called Ubuntu Pro, likely to aid monetising efforts.
