Role
Who you are
- Experience building and shipping large-scale, reliable, highly distributed systems
- Systems-level programming experience, especially in Rust and/or Go
- Expertise in L2, L3, and/or L4 networking protocols
- Experience building on top of Linux kernel networking primitives – netfilter, nftables, eBPF, tc, network namespaces, etc
- Experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs and backend systems
- Experience with large-scale distributed data pipelines, from data structuring to efficient querying to data analysis
- Excellent debugging and optimization skills
- Attention to detail and ability to solve complex customer problems
- Own solutions end-to-end and driving the design, development, and deployment process
- Able to work across teams and level common, sustainable solutions
- Creative, open-minded, collaborative problem solver

What the job involves
- As a backend software engineer on the Magic Visibility team, you will contribute across a wide range of technologies and systems to deliver new products that provide network visibility and insights to our customers
- You will help build and grow a globally distributed network data collector and the pipeline that delivers, processes, and stores the massive stream of data
- You will build backend services that analyze this network data and correlate it with a multitude of other data sources within Cloudflare
- You will build APIs and integrations with other products such as DDoS mitigation, Magic Transit, and Magic Firewall to enable customers to take action on insights we surface
- You will scale all of these technologies to enable access to these products to all Cloudflare customers
- We’re looking for curious, empathetic engineers who are excited to work across the whole stack of technologies we use at Cloudflare to quickly deliver end-to-end solutions!
Our take
Cloudflare is a multi-service global network that provides web security and infrastructure, DDoS mitigation services, and a content delivery network. Founded in 2009, Cloudflare has risen to become an industry giant, with around 25 million global internet properties on its network.
Cloudflare has been responsible for a number of admirable initiatives, offering free web protection to human rights groups, journalists, artists, and US election websites. This goes some way to counteracting the flak Cloudflare has received in some circles for the controversial groups and users who use its services. This chequered history, however, has not affected its over 80% market share in the content delivery network field.
This is perhaps in part because it has proven sharp at staying abreast of the rapidly morphing tech and digital space and customer demands. For example, Cloudflare is shifting to 100% renewable energy usage to create a zero-emissions internet, and in 2020 released a feature that would help users navigate data privacy regulations by selecting where their data is stored.
The cloud infrastructure market reached $53 billion in 2022. While the Big 3 (Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) own 65% of the market, that still leaves billions of dollars left for companies such as Cloudflare. Its ambitious and successful work is likely to continue being a crucial feature of the web, but in 2023, placed it in the crosshairs of hackers looking to exploit its infrastructure. The beginning of 2024 saw Cloudflare vow to bolster its security and patch vulnerabilities.
