Role
Who you are
- We’re looking for someone who has been in the trenches as a backend engineer and is excited to lead a growing team while also taking on compliance responsibilities. You’ll need both technical credibility and the ability to drive process and people outcomes
- Strong experience in Python and Django in production environments
- Comfortable building, reviewing, and optimizing backend systems (APIs, database, caching, async jobs)
- Familiarity with React — able to understand and critique frontend architecture and code
- Solid AWS experience (EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, Lambda, etc.), and experience with CI/CD, monitoring, and logging
- Experience or interest in compliance and security frameworks, particularly SOC 2 Type II
- Understanding of secure coding practices, access controls, vendor audits, logging, and incident response
- Excellent communicator who can bridge engineering, leadership, and cross-functional partners
- Evidence of building strong team culture, managing conflict, and mentoring engineers
- Comfortable delegating and scaling processes over time
- High ownership and accountability — you take responsibility end-to-end
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment
What the job involves
- At Cube, we’re building the next generation of B2B SaaS infrastructure. We run a modern stack (Python/Django backend, React frontend, AWS infrastructure) and are committed to delivering high-quality, secure, and scalable products. As we grow we’re investing in leadership roles to drive engineering excellence
- As our Engineering Manager, you’ll lead a team of ~5 engineers
- You’ll split your time between hands-on backend work and managerial responsibilities
- You’ll be instrumental in shaping our architecture, driving operational excellence, maintaining audit readiness, and scaling the team with high standards
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team of engineers, fostering growth, collaboration, and accountability
- Contribute regularly to the backend codebase (Python/Django) — design, code, review, and optimize
- Read and understand frontend (React) code to provide architectural feedback and ensure alignment
- Take increasing responsibility for our compliance initiatives, particularly SOC 2 Type II
- Help define, document, and enforce compliance controls, policies, and procedures
- Drive backend architecture, reliability, deployment, monitoring, and security improvements
- Ensure the team delivers on sprint commitments with high quality
- Collaborate with product, design, and other engineering teams on cross-cutting initiatives

- Your team consistently meets sprint goals with high quality and healthy pace
- You own a significant share of backend architecture work and positively impact our technical trajectory
- You’ve started running SOC 2 evidence cycles and are recognized as the go-to person for compliance questions
- Engineers on your team feel supported and are making measurable growth
Our take
The uncertainty, shocks, and changes faced by organizations across the board over recent years has shone a spotlight on the importance of detailed financial planning and analysis (FP&A). It’s precipitated a change in what tools companies use, too - traditional use of excel spreadsheets doesn’t always cut it in terms of efficiency and ease-of use. FP&A startup Cube is hoping to offer a solution.
Instead of looking to replace the spreadsheet with specialist software, like startups Centage and Limelight are shooting for, Cube’s approach is different. The company is banking on customers looking for a faster, more powerful solution, but one that nevertheless retains the familiarity of excel - and its easy-integration with other areas of business operations. The result is a excel-compatible, spreadsheet bi-directional product with enhanced planning features like automated data consolidation, multi-scenario analysis, and drilldown audit trail capabilities.
Investors are betting on Cube’s approach proving popular. Cube has attracted some impressive funding, and the addressable market is potentially huge; for a relatively young startup, Cube has seen good growth with a unique product.
