Role
Who you are
- Currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical field
- Hands-on experience with machine learning, including deep learning, reinforcement learning, and LLMs
- Familiar with one of the modern deep learning frameworks (e.g. Pytorch, JAX, Tensorflow)
- Hands-on experience with agent behavior modelling
Desirable
- Publications from top peer-reviewed conferences (eg: CoRL, CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, Neurips, ICLR)
- Prior industry experience (including internships) in software engineering and computer vision / machine learning
What the job involves
- Solve research problems related to multi-agent simulation in rare and safety-critical driving scenarios. This includes gracefully handling many complex situations involving social aspects (merging, negotiating narrow roads, etc), while dealing with noisy, uncertain, and incomplete information
- Frame the open-ended real-world problems into well-defined ML problems. Research and develop state-of-the-art ML approaches to address these problems effectively
- Present research findings with a wide audience within Waymo, with the goal of publishing results to the research community
- This will be a hybrid onsite internship position

Our take
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company that began as the Google self-driving car project in 2009. After initial development, it secured permits to deploy autonomous ride-hailing services in cities including Phoenix and San Francisco, but has recently hit a major bump in the road with safety concerns that resulted in a recall of over 400 self-driving cars.
With the autonomous driving industry already besieged by setbacks and public distrust, this development does Waymo no favours. That said, as an industry leader there remains the possibility it will see out the storm, but massive attention will need to be given to rebuilding trust with consumers if this is to be the case.
