Role
Who you are
- You will need to come from a mechanical or process engineering background, whilst having experience of running large, multi partner technical projects
- As well as this you will need to have excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
What the job involves
- The Technical Project Manager will work directorly with our Chief Technology Officer to help define the technical direction of our range of edible packaging solutions
- You will work with the Category owner to ensure that we are able to deliver the technical specifications required to meet our partners requirements, liaising with the technical team to ensure that everything is delivered on time and in full
- We are looking for a Technical Project Manager with a desire and the experience to continue to work on hands-on maintenance and development of machinery
- This is a rare opportunity for a passionate and hands-on engineer, to take ownership of both project management pieces but also the development of processes and manufacturing techniques, whilst continuing to work hands-on with our bespoke in-house machinery
- Technical project management of our edible packaging range
- Working with external suppliers and manufacturing partners to develop processes and manufacturing techniques
- Liaising with our in house technical team to ensure technical delivery of all of our projects
- Being the link between the formulation and ingredient requirements and the manufacturing process needs
- Maintenance both planned and reactive of our in house manufacturing machinery
- Working with the category owner to define the technical road map of the products
- Working with the category owner to assist in the commercial development of the products
- Identify and assess technical risks, ensuring proactive mitigation and resolution strategies
- Chair dedicated technical meetings with technical resources, separate from standard project updates, to discuss technical progress against agreed milestones, challenges, and improvements
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the technical community
- Ensure technical standardization and best practices are consistently applied across the category (SOPs, Project & Trial planning, reporting)

Our take
To tackle the mounting issue of single-use plastics, a number of startups are turning to the development of seaweed-based alternatives. It’s a promising pivot: seaweed can be farmed without crowding out land, and is invaluable in carbon sequestration. Additionally, the finished product is transparent, edible, and naturally biodegradable. Players in the field include Oceanium, Sway, and SoluBlu - but the best funded one in the sector so far is Notpla.
Applications for the Notpla material so far have been broad and popular among enterprise clients. It’s coated Just Eat takeaway boxes, and led to Notpla’s award-winning Ooho sachet, an edible sachet containing liquids like cocktails (trialled at Glastonbury), energy drinks (trialled at the 2019 London Marathon), and condiments (as seen in Nopla’s recent partnership with Heinz). But many more are on the go.
If Notpla’s record is anything to go by, these new use cases seem likely to see substantial uptake by major clients. It’s an effective solution, and one that neatly meets the sharp rise in consumer demand for sustainable packaging. Notpla's head-start on competition comes in the form of regular grants and funding and will put them in good stead to become a market leader.
