Role
Who you are
- 10+ years of experience in strategy, operations, product, or general management roles within e-commerce, retail, or consumer-facing businesses
- Proven experience owning a business line or P&L, with a strong understanding of revenue drivers and cost structures, and ability to employ creative solutions to deliver quantifiable business impact
- Strong track record of driving growth, executing cross-functional initiatives, and operating with a high level of autonomy in dynamic and fast-paced environments
- Experience working closely with Product and Engineering teams to build, test, and launch customer-facing features
- Highly analytical and data-driven, with the ability to translate insights into action
- Comfortable operating at both strategic and executional levels—from setting vision to rolling up your sleeves with a “no task is too small” mindset
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience presenting to executive leadership and gaining alignment across multiple stakeholders with varying priorities
- Passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences as well as for the broader fashion-tech and rental/resale economy
- Experience in fashion/apparel, digital merchandising, and/or optimizing conversion funnels is preferred
What the job involves
- As the GM of Reserve, you will lead and accelerate the growth of RTR’s original special event rental business that enables customers to reserve styles in advance for specific occasions
- This role gives you a meaningful opportunity to serve millions of women at key moments in their lives and shape their experience with RTR
- As a GM, you will have P&L responsibility over this core revenue stream for RTR and will be responsible for setting the vision, driving an aggressive growth strategy, and executing against a comprehensive roadmap to unlock the next phase of growth for Reserve
- You will operate at the intersection of product, merchandising, marketing, pricing, inventory, and operations, leading a dedicated cross-functional team (including engineers) to deliver a best-in-class customer experience and strong financial performance
- This is an ideal role for a strategic data-driven operator who can move seamlessly between vision and execution, and is excited to reimagine and scale a consumer-facing business
- This is a full-time role reporting to one of RTR’s Executive team members overseeing growth and will be part of the company’s extended leadership team
- Own the Reserve Business (GM + P&L Ownership): Own the P&L for the Reserve business, including revenue growth, contribution margin, and cost structure. Define and execute a strategy to scale Reserve, including identifying new growth levers, customer segments, and use cases. Establish clear KPIs and performance dashboards to measure success
- Drive Growth & Customer Experience: Identify and unlock new customer acquisition and engagement opportunities while optimizing the end-to-end customer journey, from discovery and search to booking, fulfilment, and returns. Explore marketing, pricing, merchandising, and promotional strategies to maximize traffic, conversion, and revenue per visit
- Lead Product & Technology Roadmap: Define and prioritize the product roadmap for Reserve in partnership with Product and Engineering. Lead a dedicated team of engineers to build and ship features that improve conversion, discovery, and operational efficiency
- Optimize Assortment & Merchandising: Partner with Buying, Site Merchandising, and Inventory teams to curate high-performing assortment aligned to Reserve use cases (events, weddings, seasonal moments) as well as drive improvements in inventory utilization and availability
- Improve Operations & Fulfillment: Partner with Operations to optimize booking windows and the fulfillment experience, while ensuring operational excellence for time-sensitive reservations
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead a cross functional team spanning product, engineering, merchandising, marketing, and operations while serving as the central point of accountability for Reserve performance. Present regular business updates, insights, and strategic recommendations to executive leadership
- Test, Learn, & Reimagine: Build a culture of rapid experimentation and iteration while identifying opportunities to reimagine the Reserve experience to drive step-change growth. Stay ahead of industry trends in e-commerce, fashion, and consumer behavior
Our take
Rent the Runway seeks to profit from two important trends in apparel consumption: wanting to stay on top of the latest fashion trends while living and purchasing sustainably. By providing a platform for women to rent designer pieces, its users can have it all.
The company allows users to rent, subscribe, or buy designer apparel and accessories. It achieves this with its network of partnerships with hundreds of top designers and managing the crucial but complicated logistics in-house. It offers its partnered brands sophisticated analytics about potential customers in return for lower prices on designer garments.
Rent the Runway is now focused on diversifying revenue streams while reducing its costs. Its recent partnership with Amazon is an example of this new direction: while it will use this channel to sell clothes previously rented through its platform, it will, for the first time, be selling new clothes based on rental items modified in line with market data.
While moves such as this may well shift Rent the Runway towards profitability, it also risks undercutting the company's central message of sustainability and supporting the circular economy. The company believes that by creating better quality clothing, it will nonetheless be aiding in the fight against fast fashion. Time will tell if this move helps or hinders the sustainability movement, but it is likely to boost Rent the Runway's bottom line regardless.
