Who you are
- We’re looking for engineers with a strong interest in building and architecting scalable, low latency and fault tolerant APIs

- 1+ years of experience building distributed, low-latency, high availability applications
- A degree in Computer Science, a related Engineering discipline, or equivalent experience
- Have experience developing with static-typed languages. We work mostly in Go, and while experience as a Go developer isn’t required (you can learn it pretty quickly), we do believe being good at types is an important qualification
- Enjoy building intuitive APIs for developers
- Write high quality code that’s easy to read and understand

- Familiarity with AWS technologies
- Familiarity with messaging or event driven systems
- Experience building and maintaining large public API’s
What the job involves
- The API Platform team builds high-traffic, internet-facing services that power Twitch websites, mobile clients, and our large third party developer community
- The team owns the internal and external messaging platforms that power real-time capabilities on our website, native apps and third-party apps like StreamElements and StreamLabs
- As a software engineer on the API platform team, you will help develop, maintain and innovate around our first party GraphQL APIs and real-time platforms while working with multiple product teams to deliver great experience and content to our streamers and viewers communities
- You'll shape the work of your peers, and be an integral part of our engineering team, reporting to our Engineering Manager for API Development
- Work with the product leaders to build and release new features to empower Twitch
- Work on high throughput, low latency edge services
- Contribute to architectural, design, and process discussions involving the technological choices involved in building Twitch’s GraphQL API and real-time platform
- Design and deliver robust real-time messaging features that enable seamless service notifications
- You’ll identify and uphold engineering best practices
Our take
Twitch is the world's leading video platform for gamers, allowing users to livestream gaming sessions and curate a dedicated community for their content. By dedicating the platform to gaming alone, it has amassed a loyal following of fans, and been able to launch its Partner Program where streamers can monetize their livestreams, incorporate corporate partnerships, and even attend TwitchCon, a convention where dedicated gamers can socialise.
Twitch's acquisition by Amazon in 2014 saw its viewers double in a year, bringing the platform to a wider audience. However, with YouTube streaming popularity on the rise, it has big competition to contend with, as some popular streamers prefer going live on the video giant. Interestingly, a recent move by the platform was to enable its partner streamers to make live content on other platforms - previously inhibited by its exclusivity clause - which may combat the possibility of losing streamers permanently to YouTube.
In 2022, Twitch had to contend with backlash for its proposal to cut creator income by reducing their cut of subscription earnings. However, with the plan only affecting a minute number of creators, the controversy appears to have died down. Needless to say, Twitch is for now entirely comfortable in the market - with possible plans to extend past gaming bringing the chance to generate more popularity yet.
