Role
Who you are
- 8+ years experience in risk & program management with a history of implementing and/or maturing a small program; ideally within fintech, investment adviser and/or broker dealer experience
- Experienced people manager
- Strong program and project management skills, attention to detail and follow through
- Familiarity with implementing controls associated with risk frameworks such as COSO, ISO, NIST
- Strong reporting and communication skills
- Familiarity with first principles thinking
- Capacity to engage at all levels of the organization and with all aspects of Risk requirements, from risk assessment communication to leadership to policy review and individual risk mitigation approaches
- Bonus: experience fostering a risk culture in a rapidly growing private corporation and/or managing enterprise risk in the transition from private to public company
What the job involves
- Lead and develop a small enterprise risk management team
- Provide an assessment of current state of the program, set the near term roadmap to deliver against the goals of the team
- Guide the operations of the firm’s Risk Committee
- Create and implement risk rubric through identification and scoring of current risks
- Create and implement risk assessment program across the firm
- Implement risk and change management governance protocols
- Provide risk management guidance for new business and product launches
- Streamline vendor and third party management process
- Provide a strong value-add to the leadership team through risk reporting and ad hoc updates on internal and external risks
- Engage and develop relationships with partners across the organization to facilitate risk reporting and support mitigation activities
- Define additional responsibilities in line with your definition and development of the risk program you will be leading
Our take
Founded in 2015, Stash was created in response to studies showing that 44% of Americans don’t invest in stocks, 70% of households don’t have a long-term financial plan, and 68% are afraid to retire. Stash offers beginner retail investors the tools to invest small amounts in stocks and exchange-traded funds. It aims to help new investors learn the ropes, offering preference-tailored guidance and digestible investment summaries.
Its service, although pricier than competitors like Wealthfront and Acorns, remains competitive through its highly educational and beginner-friendly focus. This is a lucrative feature for Stash, given the recent surge in first-time and amateur retail investors. The company has more than 6 million customers, and its assets under management total about $3 billion.
Its focus on long-term profit over day trading is refreshing in the retail investment app market. It could prove especially attractive to its younger customer base (average age 29), who are on the whole trending away from traditional legacy banking and looking towards new, innovative financial platforms.
Stash was not immune to the market turmoil of 2022, which particularly impacted the fintech sector, and was forced to restructure. Having streamlined the business, it received major funding and a leadership change in 2023. Stash is now setting its sights on an acquisition or public offering in the near future.
