Who you are
- The ideal candidate has both hands-on experience and a tenured leadership foundation in the following areas: planning & process, budgeting/financial planning, organizational change, communications & strategy execution
- Ability to comfortably dive into any area of the business or product, understand business needs, and facilitate executive decisions
- 7+ years experience in combination of operations, product management, program management, strategy, investment banking, venture capital, operations, supply chain, consulting, or an equivalent field. This role requires past experience in managing resourcing/staffing, and having worked directly with the C-suite on a regular basis
- Ability to track, prioritize, and drive multiple concurrent projects to success. This position is expected to utilize data and metrics to communicate needs with the ease of a business unit owner
- Excellent communicator in written and verbal form; ability to work well with executives, and able to lead and influence across multiple levels and multiple functions of an organization
- Entrepreneurial, with a high tolerance for ambiguity and complexity, and efficient with limited resources
- Proven experience designing and leading strategic planning at a hyper-growth, product-centric company
- Financial prowess and ability to create budgets, models, etc
- A good sounding board for others, with low ego, and ability to anticipate the needs of a busy executive and their direct staff
- Highest level of integrity and management of confidential information
- Strong emotional intelligence – someone who can read people, understand their motivation and background, understand what their needs and wants and the ability to play to different audiences
What the job involves
- The Chief of Staff role will report directly to the President and will lead critical strategic cross-functional projects and play a key role, alongside their Executive Business Partner, in ensuring the President is prepared and focused on the highest impact initiatives for Lyft
- The CoS will be expected to demonstrate problem solving skills, prevent challenges and save time for the executive leadership of the business
- Identify and take on ad hoc strategic projects - everything from defining new opportunities to executing cross-functional initiatives, and closing the gaps in business and operations
- Attend meetings and calls with President or on behalf as proxy
- Lead Business Affairs Leadership team meetings, prepare agendas and follow-through on action items. Drive daily/weekly executive briefings
- Use cross-functional knowledge and seek to understand issues, trends, and perspectives that may influence the business. Connect the dots for key stakeholders to drive increased alignment
- Communicate priorities, activities, and results to the larger organization, while ensuring deliverables are met. Have a strong pulse and feedback loop on organizational needs
- Craft and prepare President’s internal communications and presentations
- Exemplify empathy, inclusivity and support diversity and belonging across Lyft; foster Lyft’s culture and team member experience across the board
- Hiring and onboarding key personnel; responsible for executing onboarding plans
- Act as a trusted confidant and sounding board to multiple stakeholders on sensitive topics
- Drive planning and proactive execution of business priorities
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialled and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app, whilst the acquisition of European competitor Freenow could add 6 million new riders to its platform in 2026.
