Who you are

We are seeking research scientists and engineers at all levels of experience to join our team in London to work closely with AI scientists, engineers, informaticians, and drug scientists
A strong academic background, showcasing creativity and persistence in efforts
A BSc/BEng in computer science or a related field (MSc/MEng/DPhil preferred) or equivalent commercial experience
Experience of building machine learning experiments using tools such as Pandas, Scikit-learn, Tensorflow, PyTorch, etc
Strong programming skills
A problem-solving, impact-oriented mindset with an agnostic approach to languages and technology

What the job involves

As part of your internship, you will apply your machine learning knowledge and engineering rigour to develop and execute a research project around the core problems we work on at BenevolentAI: scientific discovery using machine learning to advance drug discovery
As part of the Knowledge product area, you will work on state-of-the-art NLP methods for Named Entity Recognition and Relation Extraction to improve our in-house methods for automatic information extraction from biomedical literature and patents
As part of the Target Identification product area, you will contribute to the development and evaluation of methods for automatic reasoning on a biomedical knowledge base to identify new therapeutic targets for diseases
As part of the Precision Medicine product area, you will work on the development and evaluation of methods to identify clinically-relevant patient subgroups leading to actionable insights
As part of the Chemistry product area, you will contribute to the development and evaluation of machine learning methods for analysis and prediction of chemical properties, and for generation of new molecules

Our take

There is a lot of research being done in the pharmaceutical industry. BenevolentAI say there's a new research paper being published every 30 seconds. They argue this information is not being used in a smart way for the discovery and development of new drugs.

To tackle this problem, BenevolentAI uses artificial intelligence to analyse biomedical information, from clinical trials data to academic papers. They can then identify molecules that have failed in clinical trials and predict how these same compounds can instead be more efficient targeting other diseases.

They argue this approach can dramatically accelerate the discovery of new drugs. They've collaborated with large pharma companies like AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceutica. A SPAC merger of 1.5 billion euros included AstraZeneca as an investor and will help BenevolentAI accelerate product development.

It's a big market, with Global Market Insights estimating the global healthcare AI market will exceed $10 billion by 2024. This gives them a big opportunity, but it won't be an easy problem to tackle.
