Who you are
- 6-8 years' Product Design experience
- Bonus for Gusto if you’ve worked in domains connected to HR like Payroll, Benefits, Finance, and/or Workforce Management
- A builder who loves being hands on crafting high quality, high impact solutions and getting them in front of customers
- Experience designing and shipping products in complex domains informed by research, data, and insights from support teams demonstrated through a portfolio of work you’ve directly contributed to
- Systems thinking, including using and contributing to a Design System and designing with a Platform-first approach
- Ability to explain the impact of your work, tradeoffs you’ve made, lessons learned, and design rationale
- The ability to think long term towards a broader vision or step change, while being able to speak to scoping and sequencing to deliver iterative value
- Experience balancing long-term design goals with an Agile-based iterative approach
- Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for collaborating across the entire company
- Experience designing end-to-end customer journeys from software to service
- Strong understanding of common web patterns, foundations, and the ability to discern when to innovate versus adopt existing standards
- Strong opinions loosely held and a willingness to engage in constructive debates about scope and tradeoffs to build alignment and unblock work
- Strong UX craft — you can break down complex experiences and design with consideration for all touchpoints
- Ability to embrace ambiguous situations as opportunities to create

What the job involves
- As a member of the Core Experiences team, you’ll have the opportunity to shape how Gusto’s 300,000+ customers grow and manage their teams
- You’ll own end-to-end design in critical areas like permissions, workflow management, and team member lifecycle
- You’ll also develop UX patterns to help the rest of Gusto build features that feel predictable, easy to use, and personalized to customers
- Work with cross-functional partners in Product Management, Engineering, and Data Science to understand customer problems, key opportunities in your domain, and define both the long term UX vision and also short term releases that unlock customer value
- Collaborate with our Research, Data Science, and Customer Support teams to build a holistic understand of customer needs, and make sure they’re shared with your teams to inform their thinking, build empathy, and inform prioritization decisions
- Design platform capabilities that accelerate delivery of predicable, scalable, high quality experiences for all our customers
- Advocate for great UX, inspiring your teams with a strong point of view about what’s possible and aspirational for your product areas and Gusto as a whole
- Hold high standards for the customer experience, including partnering with engineering partners to refine the end customer experience and ensure that what we release is bug free, performant, accessible, and responsive
- Speak clearly to tradeoffs and the “Why” behind design decisions in terms non-designers can understand and participate in
- Provide and seek feedback from other designers to always push the bar for quality
- Lead designers on other teams in developing cohesive solutions for shared problems
- You’ll drive team-wide impact through mentorship, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration
Our take
For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy which many SMB owners don’t have. The three co-founders of Gusto – all coming from small business backgrounds – collaborated on a Fintech company that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.
The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 200,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. In 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and its position in a competitive market, including two other fintech startups, Ardius and Symmetry.
Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. Although Gusto has found itself impacted by the macroeconomic situation, through the significant effect it has had on its clientele, the company still appears positive for the future after raising funds in 2023 that will see it reach key profitability benchmarks. It continues to consolidate its platform, for example by integrating with OpenComp to grant its users access to the company's Compensation Intelligence Platform.
