Our take

While there has been a proliferation of decentralised autonomous organisations (DAO) in recent years, the uniquely voluntary organisational structures often have difficulty resolving disputes between members. Aragon was founded to solve this, providing Web3 communities the tools needed to set up a DAO, including the infrastructure to vote on issues, solve disputes and safely raise and pay out funds.

Third party dispute settling is not new in the Web 3 space, with organisations such as Voatz offering blockchain voting. However, competitors have been somewhat lax in security, causing distrust even in decentralised solutions for conflict resolution. Aragon has carefully crafted its product and brought on the support of Tim Draper (who previously backed Tesla, SpaceX and Theranos) in developing its solution. Since then it has grown to create 3800 DAOs with over 300,000 members in total, managing a total value of $300 million between them.

In recent years, Aragon has released its own token to decrease the costs of subsidising contracts. It is now moving to reconstitute itself as a DAO - though it previously served the DAO community, it wasn't yet one itself. It is also focusing on developing its mobile app and SDK to allow its users to create DAOs without any coding. If it is able to continue its growth, it will be well on the way to achieving its goal of becoming the defacto court of the online jurisdiction.

Company values

  • Aragon is committed to:
  • Building organizational forms that defend self-sovereignty — where a user can always exercise choice, either by participating or exiting
  • Creating collaboration mechanisms in which violence is not only disincentivized, but impossible
  • Decentralizing power in order to dismantle unjustified power — which usually springs from centralization
  • The creation of long-term value versus short-term profit — which in turn, advances sustainability
  • A world in which every person can participate in these new organizational structures
