Who you are
- BS or MS in CS or EE, or equivalent
- 7+ years of experience developing comprehensive, well-tested, and high-performance applications
- Proficiency in Java
- Proficiency in Javascript/Typescript on the server side and browser
- Basic experience with react
- Basic experience working with any geospatial library on the server side
- Basic knowledge and interest in working with geospatial math
- Experience designing and extending large-scale systems, including RESTful APIs, microservice architectures, and data ingestion methods
- A track record as a technical leader with cross-team impact
- Understanding and adherence to industry-standard best practices in software development and architecture
- Familiarity with AWS services, including S3, EKS, Redis, Lambda, and MSK
- Experience with Go and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch is a plus
What the job involves
- The Search Team is at the heart of the Compass Engineering organization, driving the search capabilities across our suite of real estate tools
- This team is responsible for ingesting listing data and providing it through REST APIs that serve various front-end components on our website and mobile apps. Their work encompasses everything from finding and paginating listings to sorting, clustering, and boosting search results, both in list and map views
- We’re looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer who will own and enhance our Map Search experience
- You will build new features and functionality, boost performance, and increase the reliability and accuracy of our Map Search results, all while keeping cost efficiency in mind
- Build, develop, and scale the platform that empowers real estate professionals, buyers, and sellers
- Become a domain expert in real estate technology, serving as an empathetic partner to our customers
- Inspire, recruit, and mentor fellow engineers
- Operate within a scalable engineering culture that leverages modern principles of distributed systems and automated CI/CD/testing/monitoring to drive efficiency

Our take
Compass uses an AI-driven platform to smooth out and speed up the process of buying, selling, or renting property. It functions much like a traditional broker, but employs tech to reduce the time, uncertainty, cost and friction of transactions for buyers, sellers & agents.
It's disrupting a sector so far largely averse to tech innovation, allowing users to close deals in less time than the industry average of 30-45 days. Compass is now the largest independent real estate brokerage in the USA, with over 29,000 agents nationwide.
Despite being a leading residential brokerage and competing well, Compass has remained unprofitable. While the company is replanning its cost structure to be profitable over the next year, it announced its third round of payoffs in early January 2023. Its profit-generating plans include expanding into mortgages, escrow & title services.
