Our take

The resale market across everyday clothing, collectables and luxury goods is growing rapidly, driven in part by increasing consumer interest in sustainability and the appeal of buying second-hand. This has create a large and fast-growing market with significant opportunity for platforms that can facilitate resale at scale.

Depop has differentiated itself through an experience that feels more like Instagram than a traditional marketplace, with a strong focus on social interaction, creators and influencers. The platform was also quick to recognise the value of its most engaged users, building around "power sellers" who can generate significant income from reselling items. The creator-led model has helped drive high levels of engagement and positioned Depop at the intersection of social media and eCommerce.

However, the success of this model could also attract competition from established social platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest, which are well positioned to leverage their existing networks and audiences to facilitate commers. Despite this, Depop has been acquired by Etsy and is now focused on straight partnerships across several industries to support continued growth and maintain market share.
