Role
Who you are
- Python in web or data engineering applications
- ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehousing
- Relational databases including data modeling, performance, optimizations, and crafting SQL queries
- Understanding of different types of data storage and their trade-offs
- Experience in machine learning techniques, pipelines and applications
- Ability to collaborate with engineering peers, data scientists, data analysts, and other business and product partners
- Familiarity with AWS infrastructure
- Experience in agile development
What the job involves
- Maintain and improve our data pipelines and warehouse to ensure our users have timely access to accurate data. Our current stack uses Python, Airflow, Redshift, DBT, Looker, and more
- Actively contribute to building out our machine learning platform, and partner with our data science and product teams to model, train, and apply ML models to new areas in our apps and business
- Collaborate with data analysts and other internal partners across the organization to find exciting insights within our data and make them available to our product teams
- Build and share a deep understanding of your chosen languages, framework, or other area of expertise. Push yourself and the team to be continuously learning and growing
- Demonstrate a sense of ownership for your work including understanding requirements, crafting solutions, and building robust testing plans to ensure the highest data quality
- Participate in pairing sessions, code reviews and other team habits
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Data Engineering Manager of our data team
Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
