What the job involves

We're hiring the third product designer to join the design team at Airplane. As an early member of a small design team, the scope of this role will flex the entire Airplane product ecosystem, and will play a critical role in defining the product design direction of Airplane.
At Airplane, we put engineers and designers directly on business problems, and you'll be working with a small team on end-to-end product design, roadmapping and delivery
Expect your nature of design work to be "full-stack" - you're comfortable doing whatever it takes to build a stellar product, from conceptualizing to shipping to scaling it
Up-leveling the developer experience and tools — developer being the persona that builds with Airplane. This can manifest in the form of novel developer tools and interfaces that supercharge specific workflows, software abstractions that enable new ways of building, or platform capabilities that unlock new functional building blocks
Designing for operator excellence — operator being the persona that uses the internal tools built via Airplane. This entails defining what operator excellence means, and designing the core "operating system" and the future standards of how work gets done in business software
Figuring out what the next big thing is for Airplane

Our take

One of the biggest challenges in software development is a lack of simple internal tooling, leaving teams without the tooling needed to keep business moving. Airplane’s developer-centric, code-first approach to building UIs and workflows saves ops and risk teams from being bottlenecked by an unmanaged mountain of data requests.

While platforms like Retool and Superblocks are also addressing internal tooling challenges, Airplane diverts from the typical low-code, drag-and-drop approach of creating apps by developing specialized “easy code” automation and management tools.

While the company has yet to be profitable, Airplane has effectively utilized the capital from each of its funding rounds, fueling new product releases, doubling its team, and expanding its customer base. Airplane’s products solve a small portion of the wide range of internal tooling challenges facing organizations, providing the company with an opportunity to develop a broad platform for internal tool development.
