Role
Who you are
- Data Engineering Expert: More than 6 years of data engineering experience, including the ground up, end-to-end delivery of ETL data pipelines and large, complex and growing sets
- Hands-on programmer: Excellent programming skills used to build data pipeline systems (Python, SQL, Kafka, Airflow, Spark, DBT) and troubleshoot/debug issues that arise in production environments
- Database knowledge: Strong database design skills, including experience with NoSQL data stores (MongoDB or similar) and excellent SQL skills
- Monitoring and Observability: Ability to create alerts and monitoring dashboards, and plan for end-to-end observability of business critical operations in our applications and data pipeline systems
- Cost Conscious: Ability to manage costs through the efficient use of compute costs and other cloud computing resources
- Results-driven: You are driven for results, taking the initiative to plan and execute projects from scratch in rapidly evolving environments, with significant complexity and ambiguity
- Collaborative: You can build collaborative relationships and influence the overall product roadmap using your communication skills to effectively partner with leadership and cross-functional teams
What the job involves
- The mission of Shiftsmart’s first Data Engineer will be to design and build our data engineering function from the ground up, contributing to every critical decision in how we structure, manage, and use data
- Delivering on your objectives will make data available and consumable by the business in a reliable, scalable and cost effective manner
- Our overall goal is to reduce costs, increase revenue, and gain valuable business insights, while improving the service we provide to our customers and workers, while building brand loyalty
- Architect, design and build high scale, low latency ETL data pipelines from various data sources and aligned to the business needs
- Ensure the systems are highly available and resilient to failure, while securing data access
- Determine the metrics and logs needed to build monitoring, dashboards and alerting
- Plan for observability of all business critical operations from any of the applications and underlying systems in the data pipeline
- Consider variable costs of data pipelines including the efficient use of queries to minimize GPC compute costs

Driven by the gig economy becoming more normalized and demand for flexible hours increasing, Shiftsmart saw its revenue increase by nearly 400%, and they put this success down to a competitively unique business model that sees more control being put in the hands of workers and employers alike. They have now done work in over 57 countries, and are operating tens of thousands of shifts each week.
Some user feedback suggests the company still has some kinks to iron out on their platform, with multiple complaints about delayed or missing payments. But with thousands of successful, efficient job placements found over the last few years, Shiftsmart are making strides in an area that looks set to remain in high demand.
