Who you are
- Experience in software development, specifically with building web applications at scale using Ruby on Rails
- The ability to gain fluency in new technologies quickly and work effectively in an ever-evolving environment that includes distributed teams and customers
- Demonstrated success in mentorship in software development, particularly using an Agile process and with large scale SaaS products
- A diverse base of knowledge that allows you to help your team solve complex technical problems
- A history of past projects (including notable successes and lessons learned) and
- Clear communication skills and the ability to build high-trust relationships with fellow Clions and customers
- Demonstrate a keen interest in improving your craft by using AI
- The most important part of this job is that you approach new challenges with curiosity and a drive to apply what you learn to fixing root causes, not just symptoms

- We have cross-trained developers coming from Java, Python, C++, and JavaScript backgrounds, and are happy to help you learn Ruby when you get here

What the job involves
- We are currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Invoicing to join our engineering team in Burnaby
- This role requires you to be in office a minimum of twice per week on one of our Anchor Days
- The Senior Software Engineer, Invoicing is a hands-on technical leader responsible for building, operating, and evolving critical client-facing features within Clio Manage, our industry-leading case management platform
- In this role, you will focus on helping attorneys create a more efficient invoicing process, enabling them to easily summarize their accomplished work and prep clear, accurate invoices for client review
- Because these workflows are a core part of the user experience, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional software engineering teams across the broader payments, accounting, and reporting space to ensure a seamless end-to-end journey
- This role owns the full lifecycle of what they build, from design and implementation through monitoring, iteration, and long-term support
- Work with a team of developers to solve complex problems and provide elegant solutions to Clio customers
- Work in an agile environment with our team of full stack developers across a variety of projects
- Learning new things, and challenging yourself and honing your craft as a Rails expert
- Participating in diverse projects and collaborating with multiple engineering teams across the globe
- Review and provide feedback on code, both from within your own team or across all of Clio
- Collaborate with teams across Clio to diagnose, understand, and solve problems, and to build solutions that may span many areas
- Teach and learn from those around you - providing constructive feedback to those around you, and taking on feedback to help grow

Modern law firms increasingly manage their work digitally but the lack of a specialized remote solution means that workflows have become fragmented. This leads to legal practice managers having to juggle multiple software solutions across various devices.
Clio provides a legal practice management platform designed for law firms, allowing users to manage billing for legal aid cases, access and manage documents and store files across multiple devices. Whilst other startups are operating in this niche, Clio has uniquely focussed on synchronisation across remote devices and on a wide range of integrations, allowing the user to access information from other industry standard software such as Xero and Klyant from within a single interface.
Clio has raised significant funding and benefited from the COVID-era shift toward cloud technologies. More recently, the company has experienced rapid growth following the integration of AI into its platform in 2023. Alongside this, it surpassed $200M in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in mid-2024 and has since grown to an impressive $500M ARR. The company was valued at $5B following a $500M funding round in 2025, with the investment supporting further AI development and platform expansion.
