Role
Who you are
- A hands-on creative who’s looking to step up to greater responsibility
- At least three years’ work experience in social media and content
- Video production and editing skills (ideally Adobe suite)
- Social listening experience (we use Brandwatch)
- Content performance analysis and reporting – you know in your bones what makes great social content, but you know how to look at the data too, testing and learning constantly to make us better
- You’re ‘chronically online’, meaning you’re fascinated by the many facets of internet culture and personally use social media a lot
- You have a deep understanding of people, how they think and how they engage with content and social media
- T-shaped: you’re adaptable and happy to have a crack at everything
- You’re genuinely passionate about making a big green dent in the universe
What the job involves
- We’re looking for an experienced social media manager who can wear many hats with the overarching goal of growing the impact of the social media Octoverse
- Create stuff: join our small content team to create scroll-stopping video and written social posts from memes to mini-mockumentaries to transparent energy explainers
- Listen and lurk: use social listening tools to predict wider trends and better understand customers, competition and climate. You’ll work closely with our Community Management team and directly talk to customers yourself
- Measure impact: you’ll look at the data to help us test, learn and meaningfully improve our content performance
- Keep the wheels turning: you’ll be responsible for getting our content from idea to feed. We don’t do long-term scheduling and content calendars. Instead with your finger firmly on the pulse you’ll prioritise our output week-to-week to keep it timely, fresh and impactful
- Social media is 24/7 and Octopus is famous for its customer service. You’ll regularly see our directors popping up on X and Facebook groups to look after customers and this team supports them
- This doesn’t mean work all the time, but if you are keen on flexible working over clocking in and out, this is more likely to be a job for you

According to Octopus, the energy industry in the UK is ruled by a handful of complacent companies peddling fossil fuels, pricing trickery, and poor customer service. Aiming to disrupt the status quo with sustainable energy, Octopus entered the market in 2016 and now supplies energy to millions of homes in a number of countries. Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors.
Octopus further differentiates itself through its aspiration to make everything as easy as possible for consumers, from the simplicity of their bills and the fact that customers are not locked into a contract, so they can leave at any time, to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit customers. It aims to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of its tariffs use 100% green electricity, while being cheaper than competitors' non-green tariffs.
Its continually creating innovative new products too. For example, Octopus Tracker, where prices change daily to guarantee you get the market rate; Agile, where the price changes every half hour to enable you to benefit from cheap electricity when the sun shines, the wind blows, and the networks are under-utilised. One of the current challenges the company faces is that its products are more complex than its competitors, given that it uses 1000x more data than traditional energy companies. Because of this, it's exploring ways to explain to customers exactly how their products work.
