Role
Who you are
- 3+ years of experience as an engineering lead or manager, with at least 2 years managing a team of 4+ engineers
- Previous experience as a hands-on engineer (3+ years), with recent exposure to both people management and technical leadership
- Strong technical foundation in either frontend (React, Next.js) or backend (Ruby on Rails) development
- Proven track record of delivering cross-functional projects in agile environments, from shaping solutions to successful execution
- Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, fostering alignment and collaboration across functions
- Experience mentoring and coaching engineers to grow their skills, confidence, and impact
- A background in startups or scale-ups, comfortable operating in fast-paced, evolving environments
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance technical constraints, business needs, and user impact
- A servant leadership mindset focused on multiplying your team’s impact and empowering others to succeed
What the job involves
- You’ll balance technical leadership with hands-on engineering (30–60% of your time), supporting a talented group of frontend and backend engineers. In your first few months, you’ll focus on embedding into the team, building strong relationships, and leading from the front technically and culturally
- Lead and inspire a cross-functional engineering team focused on growth initiatives, working closely with product, design, data science, and marketing to iterate on Raylo’s product
- Manage a team of engineers, supporting their development through regular 1:1s, coaching, and performance management, while fostering a culture of feedback, growth, and autonomy
- Collaborate with product and design teams to shape the roadmap, define impactful problems, and co-lead rituals such as sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives
- Own the technical direction of projects, identifying process gaps and proposing improvements to enhance team velocity, product quality, and developer experience
- Ensure project delivery by coordinating execution, tracking progress, and shipping impactful features that directly support business growth and user experience
- Investigate and resolve production issues as part of the team’s engineering rota, continuously improving system reliability and performance
- Set clear expectations and promote ownership within the team, aligning on OKRs and helping shape future goals in collaboration with Product and Design

- As an FCA-regulated business, we conduct background checks (DBS and AML) on all successful candidates who are offered a position at Raylo during the onboarding process

Through its subscription platform, consumers and Small to medium-sized businesses can subscribe to new and refurbished devices like phones, tablets and laptops, paying a monthly fee for the length of the contract.

The environmental and economic benefits of device lifecycle extensions are significant, as, despite consumers’ increasing reliance on electronic devices, research from Ofcom indicated that many consumers struggle with the affordability of mobile phones. Raylo's circularity is also an essential part of the move towards more sustainable production practices and the reduction of tech waste.
In 2022, Raylo cemented its status as an actor for good with its recognition as a B-Corporation. The company has also netted considerable funds, which will enable it to expand operations, with plans to grow its direct-to-consumer channel, as well as an expansion of its embedded subscription integrations with some of the world's leading device brands.
