Who you are
- The ideal candidate should have a background in backend development and experience working with cloud-hosted services
- This person should also be a motivated self-starter who is able to feel at ease working in a fast-paced environment
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with backend experience using a JVM language, preferably Java
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, object-oriented design, and multi-threaded programming
- Experience with cloud-hosted services, like AWS or GCP
- Proficiency in both RDBMS and NoSQL databases
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills

- With our applications running on Google Cloud Kubernetes Engine, we support a proprietary banking core that can scale to handle millions of transactions a day
- Our stack includes MongoDB and Spanner for persistence, Pub/Sub for asynchronous event processing, Dataflow for data transformation paired with BigQuery and Google Cloud Storage for data storage and analytics
- Our backend services are written in Java and our data pipelines are built in Scala
- We work across a broad set of domains, including user-facing products like liquidity offerings and reward programs, infrastructure for machine learning and experimentation, real-time fraud detection and identity protection, and large-scale transaction processing across multiple payment rails
- You will work to lead key business initiatives, improve existing architecture and services, and design large-scale data-intensive applications
- Owning the end-to-end delivery of key business initiatives from product discovery, to system design, and all the way to feature launch
- Architecting and evolving core distributed services for reliability, scalability, and performance
- Designing and delivering large-scale data-intensive applications with cutting edge techniques in:
- Real-time transaction decisioning
- Stream-processing
- Machine learning
- Evolving org-wide engineering standards for architecture, testing, and monitoring practices and documentation
- Mentoring engineers through code and architecture reviews, raising the technical bar of the team
- Partnering with product, data and business stakeholders to shape technical direction and product roadmap
Our take
Current is a neobank offering digital banking services, with a focus on younger generations and paycheck-to-paycheck customers. It offers a swathe of innovative services including on-demand pay and overdraft protection to people underserved by traditional institutions.
Younger customers are expected in the coming years to pivot from legacy institutions to the higher functionality and lower costs of consumer-first neobanks like Current. By netting an average customer age of 27, Current is establishing itself as a pack leader among rival but less well-funded neobanks like Step or Till.
It is also successfully competing with legacy institutions by exploiting the relatively adaptive nature of neobanking. Current has previously offered customers advanced access to stimulus checks, and is seeking to expand into crypto. The company continues to raise funding which supports its continued growth and an accelerated path to profitability.
