Who you are
- You bring 6+ years of relevant software engineering experience, with at least 1 year dedicated to full-time engineering team management
- You have a proven track record in managing complex, cross-functional projects across multiple teams
- You're skilled at hiring talented engineers at various levels and building high-performing teams
- You can make strategic trade-offs to deliver high-quality code in a fast-paced, scaling environment
- Your expertise includes strong development and system design skills, with experience in Python, React, and AWS as a plus
- You're adept at optimizing APIs and SQL queries for performance
- You're familiar with monitoring tools such as DataDog, Sentry, or similar services
- You hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Tech Lead/Manager to lead a small team (4 to 5 people) of experienced engineers
- TLM at Kalepa is a blend of hands-on software engineering and leadership
- The candidate needs to be able to dive deep into problems, effectively delegate responsibilities, grow and develop talented engineers, and cultivate a results-driven, high-performance culture
- Technical: coding, conducting code reviews, and discussing architectural designs
- Operations: triaging issues, investigating timeouts, and ensuring the stability of the system
- Performance: improving latency of SQL queries and API endpoints
- Cost: optimizing usage of cloud and other service providers to keep expenditures under control
- Management: growing the team, delegating, ensuring important items are being delivered on time
- Integrations: building and designing integrations with external systems
- Note: This is a hands-on position, and you will be required to spend around 50% of your time coding

The reason for this is that whilst businesses each present their own unique set of hazards, identifying them for each company is an incredibly lengthy process for human underwriters.
Kalepa leverages human-interrupted artificial intelligence to identify the true hazards of a business through a data-driven approach and provide insurance that is priced accordingly. The company claims that it reduces the time that insurance providers take to provide quotes by over 40% and helps businesses save over $15M in losses, whilst also improving coverage uptake for insurance providers.
Whilst the commercial insurance sector is certainly oversaturated, Kalepa stands out by providing its AI-driven underwriting platform to insurance providers, helping them compete through faster quotes and lower prices. In addition to its underwriting platform, the company also provides its solutions in the form of embeddable APIs, and recently formed a new MGA that will underwrite excess casualty risks using Everspan paper.
