Who you are
- 8+ years of leadership experience overseeing data science, analytics or comparable intelligence teams
- Proven experience managing data scientists, analysts, and ML engineers, with a track record of growing and developing talent
- Ability to define and drive technical and strategic roadmaps, balancing immediate delivery with long-term vision
- Strong collaborator with senior Product, Engineering, and business leaders. Skilled at influencing and aligning across functions
- Deep understanding of applied analytics, experimentation, and machine learning in product settings

What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Director of Data Science to lead a team working on some of ThredUp’s most important domains: search, personalization, recommendations, product analytics, experimentation, [and data science platforms such as experimentation systems and pipelines]
- Reporting to the VP of Product & Data Science, you’ll partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Merchandising leadership to shape priorities, translate ambiguous business challenges into structured data problems, and ensure your team delivers analyses, models, and data products that drive measurable impact
- This role is first and foremost about people leadership, strategy, and cross-functional alignment. You’ll empower a talented group of data scientists and analysts to do their best work, advocate for their priorities at the leadership table, and ensure data science is consistently influencing product and business decisions at scale
- Lead and Develop the Team: Directly manage a team of ICs (currently 5), setting goals, providing feedback, and fostering growth
- Set and Drive the DS Roadmap: Partner with Product and Engineering leaders to define priorities across search, recs, personalization, analytics, experimentation [and DS platforms]. Translate company objectives into a clear, actionable roadmap for your team
- Advocate and Align: Represent DS perspectives in senior product and cross-functional forums. Ensure tradeoffs, dependencies, and resource needs are understood and prioritized appropriately
- Elevate Technical Work Through Leadership: Guide your team to deliver with rigor and impact by shaping processes, metrics, and experimentation practices. Ensure architectural decisions for DS align with long-term company vision
- Foster a Data-Driven Culture: Champion best practices in analytics and data science across thredUP, building trust in data-driven decision making and elevating the role of DS in the product development lifecycle
- [Own DS Platforms]: Oversee DS-owned infrastructure such as the experimentation platform (Abbacado) and data science pipelines, ensuring reliability, scalability, and adoption across teams

Over 40% of Gen Z consumers claim to have bought used clothing as opposed to 20% of Gen X and Boomers. Yet, despite this change in fashion trends, consumers must often rely on brick-and-mortar thrift stores and unregulated second-hand eCommerce marketplaces in order to access to find pre-owned clothing.
ThredUp provides an online marketplace for the buying and selling of secondhand fashionwear, offering affordable prices on discount clothing whilst promising a regulated and consistent approach to quality and cleanliness standards. The company acquires its clothing through sellers sending packages of clothing, which the company then sifts through to decide what is sellable and what should be returned.
The company went public in 2021 and immediately acquired Remix, a European second-hand fashion outlet, as part of its international expansion plans. It has however struggled to achieve profitability thanks to global economic turmoil and a glut of new clothing in the fashion industry causing prices to drop sharply. It is focusing on reducing its operating costs and expanding its storage capacity, and is expected by analysts to weather the current conditions in good form.
