Role
Who you are
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field
- Must be able to commit to at least 3 days/week in person in our Boston, MA office location
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript
- Experience with backend frameworks for Node.js (e.g., NestJS or similar)
- Familiarity with databases and ORMs (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Prisma, etc.)
- Experience designing GraphQL or RESTful APIs
- Ability to work independently, solve complex problems, and take ownership of projects
- Nice-to-have: Experience at a fast-growing startup or similar environment
- You've seen a mountain goat 🐐

What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to help build and scale Remark’s platform
- Ou’ll focus on designing, optimizing, and maintaining backend services, infrastructure, and data pipelines that power Remark’s e-commerce and AI-driven experiences
- This is a high-ownership role where you’ll have the flexibility to shape technical decisions, optimize architecture, and drive key projects from start to finish
- You’ll work on everything from scalability challenges to API design to data processing, ensuring that our backend remains robust, efficient, and reliable
- We use a modern TypeScript-based stack, including NestJS, Prisma, Bull, LangChain, and GraphQL, but we’re always open to new ideas and approaches
- While this role is primarily backend-focused, you’ll also have the opportunity to learn and work with frontend technologies if they interest you
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services that scale reliably and efficiently
- Optimize database performance, API efficiency, and system reliability
- Build and improve GraphQL and RESTful APIs to support frontend applications and integrations
- Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical decision-making
- Balance speed and quality, with a focus on tangible results
- Develop actionable roadmaps for new capabilities, and work with the engineering team to execute on that roadmap
Our take
With user reviews commonplace within eCommerce, it can be easy for consumers to get bogged down in contradictory or misleading advice when purchasing. Remark helps online shoppers make more informed decisions by pairing them with product experts - artists, musicians, athletes, makeup artists - empowering them to find the perfect buy for their needs.
Remark’s live chat platform not only allows users to query the product experts but also trains AI models on these experts. These chatbots can answer questions in the same style and with the same information as the product experts, thus ensuring somebody is always on hand to answer questions. Human experts are incentivised by earning a cut of each sale made through Remark.
The company mostly serves brands who integrate the platform into their online customer experiences. This is shaping up to be a lucrative market, as more brands shift their flagship stores to online rather than brick-and-mortar establishments. With at least 45 brands already using its platform, Remark is off to a good start, and an influx of Seed funding will support further product development.
