Role
Who you are
- You have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent
- You have at least 6 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms
- You have at least 3 years of experience with machine learning/AI in a software development environment
- You have experience developing and maintaining machine learning platforms
- Ability to work in a fast-paced hybrid environment and handle stress appropriately and/or ability to solve practical problems and be sufficiently adaptable to handle dynamic situations with little advance notice
- Experience working on cross-functional teams with ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal communications, including asynchronous interactions with others
- You have strong proficiency in English and effective communication skills

- You have experience in Generative AI infrastructure
- You have experience with machine learning/AI in a cloud native environment
- You have experience with infrastructure cost management in a cloud native environment
- You have experience in edge-computing
What the job involves
- Niantic’s Engineering Team seeks a Staff Software Engineer specialized in Generative AI Infrastructure to build platforms that empower engineers and researchers to create innovative user experiences with the emerging Generative AI technologies
- Our team powers capabilities across our games, geo-based, and AR platforms through productionizing large scale models
- Your work will directly help grow the features in our games as well as the capabilities of our technology platforms
- Co-lead the technology and innovation strategy for Generative AI infrastructure at Niantic
- Stay up-to-date on the latest Generative AI infrastructure innovations, build and iterate the full-stack Generative AI infrastructure
- Stay up-to-date on the latest Generative AI model innovations, proactively manage the internal-hosting model fleet
- Work with cross-functional partners, including engineers, machine learning researchers, product managers, game producers and art designers, to understand their technical needs, or translate their non-technical demands into technical requirements, and develop platform solutions that accelerate their journeys
- Collaborate with team members and stakeholders, including regular and reliable attendance and participation in meetings
- Enable cutting-edge Generative AI application prototyping and development on multiplatform through infrastructure building blocks
- Contribute to the growth of the Generative AI ecosystem at Niantic by producing and maintaining high quality documentations, organizing interactive codelabs etc

Niantic Labs is a software development company creating augmented reality mobile games, such as Monster Hunter Now, Pikmin Bloom, and Pokémon GO, that encourage players to go outside, explore, and meet people. The company was formed in 2010 as an internal startup within Google. Since its inception, hundreds of millions of people have used its products and services.
Although Niantic made a name for itself in the mobile gaming industry through the success of Pokémon Go, the company is hoping to become a platform for other developers to build location-aware AR apps on top of. In 2022, it released a location mapping software for AR, allowing AR experiences to be grounded to a physical location, like the front of a building or a park monument, rather than just floating aimlessly through a phone’s camera view.
Niantic plans to use this platform for an AR-based metaverse, an alternative to Meta’s plans for a VR-based metaverse that renders us bound to VR headsets. The company believes that an AR metaverse on a 3D map of the world will play a critical role in the next transition in computing, and raised funds to make this vision a reality in 2021.
