Who you are
- Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field
- Knowledge in machine learning, deep learning, NLP, and Computer Vision
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras
- Familiarity with data processing tools, such as Pandas and NumPy
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to think creatively and adapt to new challenges
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
- Passion for learning and staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in machine learning, NLP, and Computer Vision
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work through ambiguity

What the job involves
- We are seeking a highly motivated Machine Learning Engineer Intern for the Fall of 2023, focusing on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computer Vision applications
- This internship is an excellent opportunity for MS or PhD candidates to gain hands-on experience, take ownership of projects, and contribute to the development of our state-of-the-art robotic inventory management system
- As a Machine Learning Engineer Intern, you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including Data Science, Software Engineering, and Product Management, to develop machine learning models, implement solutions, and ensure the successful deployment and maintenance of these models in production
- Assist in the development, implementation, and optimization of machine learning models and algorithms for NLP and Computer Vision applications
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and contribute to the development of solutions
- Conduct research on cutting-edge techniques and tools in machine learning, NLP, and Computer Vision
- Participate in the evaluation of model performance and contribute to improvements ensuring accuracy and efficiency
- Document and present project progress, findings, and insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Walmart Advanced Systems & Robotics is a division of Walmart focussed on building robotics and complimentary technology to streamline retail and fulfilment operations. Founded as Alert Innovation, the company has partnered with Walmart from the start, meaning it was no surprise when the retail giant acquired it in 2022.
The company's goal is to use robotics to replace labor-intensive processes, for example the gathering of requested items in fulfilment centers. Its Alphabot hybrid warehouse system provides automated picking that works alongside human workers, with robots retrieving items and delivering them to a picking station where workers can efficiently prepare the customer orders.
With such a unique position as a division of a major retailer, Walmart Advanced Systems & Robotics should benefit from insight into the fulfilment issues that will most benefit from robotics automation. With more projects in development, it will be interesting see what it tackles next in grocery supply chain automation or beyond.
