Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organisation on the planet to achieve more. Their mission is grounded in both the world in which we live and the future we strive to create. Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975, with Gates famously dropping out of Harvard to start the company, whose only product then was a BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800. The company rose to dominance in the 1980s with the success of MS-DOS which would later become the Windows operating system. Today it is estimated that 1.2 billions people use a Windows based PC.
Since the 1990s, it has increasingly diversified from the operating system market and has made a number of major acquisitions including LinkedIn, Skype and GitHub. Recent acquisitions are aligned with Microsoft's wider strategy focusing on cloud computing and enterprise SaaS. Under new CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft has moved towards a more horizontally focused cross platform experience with its Azure, Microsoft Teams and Office 365 products all achieving great success and skyrocketing adoption.
In 2020, Microsoft was the third company ever to achieve a trillion dollar valuation. The company's turnaround under new CEO Satya Nadella is heralded within the tech industry as one of the most impressive ever, taking Microsoft from a stagnant giant reeling from the failure of the Windows Phone to an innovative machine at the forefront of tech innovation.
