Role
Who you are
- 12+ years industry experience, using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
- 5+ years managing UX researchers
- Experience with a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and a strong understanding of industry best practices
- A demonstrated track record of delivering impactful insights within complex or technical problem spaces
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Strong experience managing remote and globally distributed teams
- Past experience leading research on cross-cultural products and international research
Desirable
- Advanced degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Cognitive Sciences
- Fluency in a language beyond English
- Experience conducting research in the Payments space, especially international payments
- Past close collaboration with other research functions, including Market Research or Consumer Insights
What the job involves
- The Experience Research team’s mission is to provide the robust, rich, and actionable research that product teams need at every stage of the product development cycle. As a researcher, you are embedded with a team of designers, PMs, and other cross-functional partners
- We are looking for a Senior Staff Research Manager to drive insights across multiple teams focusing on international product strategy. In this role, you will manage a team of researchers, be a key contributor to Research leadership, conduct high priority primary research, and work with stakeholders to ensure that our product solutions meet Airbnb’s high quality bar
- Lead research strategy across international product experiences, ensuring that these experiences drive value for our community and meet Airbnb’s high quality standards
- Conduct and advise on qualitative and quantitative studies within core focus area and as a member of UX Research Leadership across the UXR team
- Facilitate alignment among Product Managers, Designers, Writers, Country Managers, and partner organizations on project plans including goals, scope, and timeline
- Collaborate closely with other leads and adjacent teams to identify new or foundational research questions, anticipating the needs of the organization and informing early decision making
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders from across the company, including senior leadership
- Lead, manage, coach, and mentor a team of individual contributors to deliver insights across international growth and payments
- Execute in a fast-paced environment with ambiguity
Our take
When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.
Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.
Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
