Who you are
- At least 7 years of Product Design experience (10 years for Principal)
- At least 2 years at a venture-funded, private startup required
- For Principal level, at least 2 years in a role where you are influencing the work of others either through direct management or indirect leadership
- The majority of your experience is in-house working on direct-to-consumer products
- You’ve worked in a high-velocity, experiment-driven environment
- An understanding of when to use the design process and when to shortcut it. Your process has predictably excellent output
- You can clearly articulate the reasoning behind your design decisions. Your work demonstrates intentionality and rigorous thinking
- Demonstrated ability to measure the impact of your work and its impact on the business
- A strong portfolio that demonstrates your ability to move quickly while producing high-quality work, including interaction details, storytelling, visual polish, and content design
- A track record of raising the bar for the design practices you have been a member of
- Experience leading projects end-to-end, including discovery, problem definition, ideation, and validation, all the way through engineering implementation and measurement
- Experience in launching 0-1 products, not just iterating on something that already exists

What the job involves
- We’re looking for a seasoned designer to help build the next generation of products at Ethos. As part of a team, you’ll help set the bar for quality and impact for the team. You’ll work across a variety of products and experiences, including both:
- “Zero-to-one” experiences where you operate in a fast-moving startup within a startup, and
- Optimizing our core businesses where you drive meaningful gains to our bottom line
- You’ll work on our “Consumer” team, where you’ll help lead the strategy and execution to grow our business. You’ll explore and launch improvements to established funnels and explore wholly new business lines that will grow to contribute meaningfully to our overall revenue
- Lead design strategy across multiple business units
- Help set the vision for our overall user experience
- Build new products and iterate on existing ones
- Balance smaller projects with big bets that level up the overall product
- Manage executive stakeholders across engineering, product, marketing, and more
- Drive improvements to the product development process with cross functional partners
- If Principal, mentor and lead the work of other designers
- Actively participate and work to transition towards an AI-augmented product building model
Our take
Ethos was founded to increase the transparency of life insurance, making it accessible and affordable to all. The company wants to add openness to the process; losing a loved one is hard enough before one even considers financial implications, particularly with the loss of a primary earner.
Ethos uses predictive technology to rapidly quote life insurance rates and verify an applicant’s medical information. This expedited process allows most users to secure life cover on the same day they apply, a process which normally takes a number of weeks. The company works with some of the biggest providers in the industry, including Legal & General America, AAA Life and Ameritas Life Insurance Corp.
Ethos has been one of the more heavily publicized of the recent wave of insurtech companies, with investors such as Google as well as celebrities Will Smith and Jay Z, taking its valuation to over $2B and putting it in a great spot for future growth.
