Role
Who you are
- We’re seeking a technical engineering manager who is excited about forming a DevOps practice and being a thought leader in that space
- The ideal candidate is excited to reach out to internal teams, listen to their needs, and plan work accordingly within the team
- The ideal candidate is also great at building relationships within the team, managing up and sharing information with the team
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or similar field
- 5+ years of experience as an Engineering manager, leading a team of 5 or more developers
- 3+ years of experience as a cloud software developer/cloud operations DevOps engineer
- 2+ years of experience with IaC (Infrastructure as Code)
- Hands-on experience with managing cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Strong experience working with CI/CD tooling
- Experience working in a Corporate environment
- Strong organization skills (balancing team capacity with commitments)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proven success managing change in an organization
- Ability to build strong relationships with team members and cross-functionally
- Strong business acumen
Desirable
- Cloud software development experience, Java/Kotlin
- K8s orchestration
- Flexibility of kanban, scrum, waterfall
- Mix experience of startup and enterprise
What the job involves
- SmartThings offers an experienced Engineering Manager a unique opportunity to lead our Release Engineering team
- Reporting To: Angela Tan
- Active solicitation of requirements
- Curate team roadmap
- Foster healthy working relationships in distributed teams
- Balance business needs, internal requests, and team needs
- Track progress and maintain a clear perspective on deadlines and roadmaps
- Communication with stakeholders on roadmap highlights, status, and risks
- Vendor management of tools used for production as the technical owner
- Strong organization skills
- Automation first, find creative solutions to complex problems
- Build and support domain expertise within the team, find opportunities to run PoCs, and help establish a technical roadmap, enabling the team to become the domain technical leader with operational excellence
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members personally and professionally
- Grow your team by recruiting and retaining strong technical and inclusive contributors
- Build relationships and gain trust within your team
- Lead end-to-end execution of initiatives and projects with your team and technical staff
- Continuously improve team practices and procedures

SmartThings, the smart home tech company, was only two years old when it was acquired by Samsung, ushering in a long partnership that has seen both companies benefit from a continuous conveyor belt of new products. Originally founded by a group of former employees of online advertising and marketing company ReachLocal, SmartThings is an app-enabled collection of tools for the home, including front door monitors, fitness apps, and smart TVs.
