Company mission

We’re on a mission. And it’s money without borders. Instant, convenient, transparent and — eventually — free.

Role

Who you are

  • You have at least 6 years indirect tax experience with either big 4 or in-house - some experience of financial services preferred
  • You have good understanding/experience of spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets) and are able to understand large volumes of complex data
  • You have solid understanding of EU VAT and cross-border indirect tax principles
  • You have the ability to work with and influence stakeholders on indirect tax matters at all levels of internal and external stakeholders
  • You are a self-starter and can organise your own work
  • You are not afraid of making decisions, can work autonomously and take initiative
  • You are able to work independently, you assume responsibility and you make your own judgement
  • You are prepared to take ownership over complex new areas and solve problems with no or very limited guidance
  • You demonstrate attention to details but can summarise key messages succinctly, verbally and in writing, adjusting your style and level of information based on the target audience

What the job involves

  • Our Tax team makes sure that we operate policies and governance procedures that ensure we comply with tax laws in every territory we do business
  • With a high level of autonomy and responsibility, you’ll work across teams to manage our overall tax strategy, reducing risks, costs and keeping us compliant
  • Providing timely, accurate, practical and proactive VAT advice to the rest of the teams as required
  • Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders to identify their needs and priorities, to enable you to work together to manage indirect tax risks globally. This can be complex given the fluid and autonomous nature of teams. Key stakeholders include other members of the tax team, financial controllers, accountants, product and expansion teams
  • Build up a network and work efficiently with external advisors, being fully aligned with the rest of the tax team, to manage indirect tax exposures, be up to date on ongoing compliance obligations and understand the impact of expansion as Wise develops its global footprint and service offerings
  • Pragmatic and commercial involvement working with the tax implementation team to support various projects including but not limited to indirect tax return automation, e-invoicing, transfer pricing, invoice coding reviews, end to end process mapping and documentation
  • Reviewing global indirect tax returns to ensure fully documented review processes and timely filings. While some of these are outsourced and others prepared internally this will require the willingness and ability to get your hands dirty and dig into the details as and if required
  • Be an engaged, pragmatic and pro-active member of the tax team, helping to make indirect tax more accessible and understood across tax and the wider business- including providing training to the finance, accounting and AP teams
  • Determining tax provisions and communicating these to stakeholders, as well as determining and enacting action plans and process improvements
  • Helping the Head of Tax in managing and reporting tax risks, tax provisions, and risk incidences to be escalated
  • Managing, leading and growing the indirect tax function

Our take

Wise started when the two founders realised they would be better off trading Estonian kroons for British pounds (and vice versa) between themselves rather than going through banks. That was back in 2011, and they've since grown Wise into one of Europe's most successful tech businesses, exchanging billions of currency every month.

Wise rapidly grew by solving a significant problem for customers, who lost too much money to banks when exchanging currency. They've attracted investment from some of the best investors in the world, from Andreesen Horowitz to Index Ventures and even Richard Branson.

The challenge for Wise will be maintaining their edge and brand power in a market that's becoming increasingly crowded with new entrants (like Revolut and Monzo) and incumbents (traditional banks) trying to catch up. To do so, the company is ramping up its digital and marketing strategies, as well as pushing for further development of its existing products.
