Role
Who you are
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; Master’s Degree preferred
- 12+ years of experience in software engineering, including expertise in Microsoft .NET applications
- Technical Expertise & Leadership: Demonstrates deep technical knowledge across multiple domains (e.g., distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD) and provides strong technical leadership, setting the standard for quality and performance
- System Architecture & Design: Advanced expertise in designing scalable, resilient architectures, including microservices, event-driven patterns (e.g., Kafka), and cloud-native deployments (e.g., AWS, Kubernetes/EKS)
- Performance & Resilience Engineering: Skilled in optimizing system performance and reliability using advanced resilience patterns (e.g., circuit breakers, bulkheads) and performance monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog)
- Cloud and Infrastructure Mastery: Proficient in cloud architecture, infrastructure automation, and DevOps practices, leveraging tools like Terraform, Kubernetes, and GitHub Actions to streamline processes and enhance system robustness
- Strategic Collaboration & Influence: Strong cross-team collaboration and strategic influence skills, capable of leading multi-team efforts and aligning technical solutions with broader business goals, ensuring consistency and quality across the platform
What the job involves
- As a Staff Engineer at Olo, you will set quality standards, lead distributed system designs, and collaborate with stakeholders on technical roadmaps
- We are looking for a developer productivity focused engineer to help build the development platform that will help make Olo’s application engineers as happy and productive as possible
- We want people who are passionate about engineering tooling and productivity
- Reporting to the Software Infrastructure Team Lead, you will help design and build our platform, as well as ensure system reliability, drive process automation, and introduce innovative technologies while acting as a technical advisor to senior leadership
- Lead the architecture and implementation of large, strategic initiatives, guiding multiple teams through complex technical challenges and aligning efforts with company-wide goals
- Provide deep technical mentorship, acting as a go-to expert for engineers at all levels and helping shape the organization's development culture and best practices
- Take ownership of critical systems' architecture and technology direction, ensuring they are scalable, reliable, and resilient
- Collaborate with engineering managers, product leaders, and other stakeholders to drive technical roadmaps and influence strategic decisions, balancing innovation with delivery and performance
- Oversee and ensure the quality of distributed systems, leading efforts to build resilient and performant services
- Monitor production environments, guiding the team in building and enhancing observability and alerting mechanisms to reduce MTTR and improve system reliability
- Champion and implement infrastructure automation and CI/CD improvements, ensuring that development and deployment processes are robust, secure, and efficient
- Play a central role in cross-team and cross-functional initiatives, collaborating with other technical leads and departments to deliver cohesive and integrated solutions across the platform
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies, assessing their fit for strategic initiatives and leading trial implementations
- Act as a key technical representative in discussions with senior leadership, effectively communicating complex technical issues and contributing to the overall technology strategy of the organization

The benefits of pandemic-imposed structures, such as digital ordering interfaces and delivery infrastructure, have outlived the reason they were brought on, as many restaurants have found these digital solutions provide both operational efficiency and additional revenue.
Olo provides all-in-one digital ordering and delivery platforms for restaurants, providing software interfaces for digital payments, menus and ordering, in addition to on-demand delivery. The platforms are provided in both mobile and web formats and facilitate both traditional and alternative ordering systems such as at kiosks, drive-thrus, and voice automated ordering. Whilst the company certainly faces competition from the variety of alternative digital ordering platforms for the catering industry, it stands out by providing an all-in-one solution, instead of focussing on just one area.
The company has partnered with catering giants such as Denny's and The Cheesecake Factory, whilst also providing affordable systems for small independent businesses. The latest addition to its offerings is the commercially available "Borderless" functionality, which has the potential to speed up and streamline payment at venues across Olo's network.
