Who you are
- 8+ years of experience writing software, and a strong engineering background
- Experience as a generalist working on both the frontend and backend to provide the best solutions for users
- A love of simple, well-tested code that is easy to extend and hard to break
- A bias for action. When you see a problem, you solve it
- The ability to convey technical ideas in common terms to business partners, product managers, designers and engineers alike
- Experience effectively and reliably delivering large projects, including breaking the projects down into smaller pieces
- Experience in Java, Ruby, Rails, React, GraphQL, PostgreSQL
What the job involves
- Design systems that represent the real-world intricacies of customs, such as global tariff classifications, client product management, free trade agreements, and partner government agencies
- Work closely with business partners, product managers and design to distill complex business problems into elegant technical solutions
- Craft the engineering vision, and own the technical landscape, for a major domain in the world of logistics that is essential to global trade
- Think big picture, dive deep into the domain and communicate the architecture of Customs systems to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Build and launch products rapidly and incrementally. We ship to production dozens of times per day
- Mentor and coach more junior engineers in the team to write modular, testable code and design scalable solutions
- Figure out the most efficient way for our customers and partners to participate in the process of moving freight across borders
- Refine systems to ingest documents, digitize them, and handle discrepancies
- Automate archaic filing processes and save our customs brokers thousands of messages, phone calls, and clicks
- Ingest incremental and large updates to a client’s product library, facilitating a self-serve customs experience
- Deliver supply chain insights to logistics teams via a world-class analytics experience

Our take
Flexport is the first international freight forwarder and customs brokerage built around an online dashboard. They were the first large disrupter in an industry that historically hasn't seen much technological innovation. Its services include technological-driven insights and flexible communication for shipping, including its own Slack-style SaaS service.
The company has grown dramatically since its inception and has worked with thousands of clients in over 100 countries. After receiving a significant amount of funding, Flexport operated with a focus on further developing the logistics ecosystem by expanding into new geographies, as well as partnering with other companies in the space.
Due to macroeconomic conditions, Flexport has experienced a recent decline in interest in its shipping services, which has forced it to make cuts to its workforce across this sector of the business. The company has since begun a pivot towards offering more supply-chain services, which smartly brings them into a market that is on the rise despite economic disruption.
