Who you are

We are looking for engineers at various experience levels who are excited about inspiring children to learn by building tools that allow children to access a fundamentally different learning experience
3-5 years of full-stack software engineering experience: you're equally comfortable on the frontend and backend
Strong proficiency in React and JavaScript
Experience building and maintaining Node.js-based applications
Solid experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL
Experience writing APIs in TypeScript
Hands-on experience with AI development tooling
Ability to craft, test, and refine prompts to effectively guide generative AI models

What the job involves

We're looking for a Software Engineer to join our AI Classroom Pod, a team at the forefront of building the next generation of learning experiences on Outschool
You'll be building AI-powered tools and interactive games that make learning more engaging for K–12 learners, while also building transparency features that help parents stay meaningfully connected to what their kids are exploring and achieving on the platform
We are an effective team of engineers distributed across the US, Canada, and South Korea
Our philosophy is to start small and then intentionally iterate to test our assumptions and learn quickly
We're iteratively building up a complex product for a highly engaged audience, getting a lot done by staying focused on the work that matters
We work in modern JavaScript (TypeScript), React, GraphQL/Apollo, and Node, backed by PostgreSQL
Our consumer search is powered by OpenSearch, fed with data from Kafka
We believe that the future of education is hybrid: online and in-person
Collaborate with a team of Engineers, Product Managers, and Designers in building high-quality products for parents, learners, educators and partners
Build and maintain software solutions on all levels of our stack from React, Typescript, HTML and CSS to Next.JS, Node.js, GraphQL, and SQL
Engage with the team in gathering requirements, day-to-day activities such as daily standups, sprint planning, retros, deploying features in production and on-call

Our take

Schooling has undergone some massive changes in recent years, with the needs of institutions and individuals changing quite radically. One company rising to meet these needs is Outschool, that operates an online platform for extracurricular classes.

Aimed at homeschooled students, Outschool saw a boom in business due to the pandemic in 2020, going on to achieve Unicorn status in 2021. Interestingly, though, it had already enjoyed swift growth and a place in Y Combinator years before lockdown began, and it has maintained an encouraging level of growth in the years since.

The hope of Outschool, and the tele-teaching sector at large, is that hybrid online/offline learning is here to stay - and interest in alternative education is certainly growing.
