BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field
A PhD in Physics or a related STEM field is welcome, but not required
At least 3 years of post-degree professional experience in software engineering or scientific computation
Must have previous experience developing software for quantum computers in industry and/or academia and a solid grasp of quantum computing and quantum information concepts
Previous experience in one or more of the following: developing compiler internals, runtimes, or programming languages; familiarity with compiler infrastructure tools such as LLVM or MLIR; a quantum programming framework such as Qiskit, Cirq, or Pennylane, and OpenQASM
Coding proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, Python, and Rust
Documented ability to translate research results into functional production code
Ability to effectively collaborate with software developers, physicists, and engineers in complementary disciplines
Temperamentally suited to work at a fast-growing, early-stage startup: self-motivated, humble, driven, collaborative, and with a high tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty
Familiarity with Git version control, automated testing, and software development best practices
Willingness to learn atomic, optical, laser physics, and quantum mechanics concepts as required to put work in context

What the job involves

Atom Computing is seeking a Senior Software Engineer – Quantum Compilers who has a passion for writing quantum software and at least 3 years of post-degree professional experience to build quantum developer tools to enable our customers to seamlessly access our quantum computers and accelerate the development of our next-generation products
In this role, which will report to the Manager of Runtimes and Compilers, you’ll work with a collegial and talented team of engineers and physicists to make your mark on the future of computing
Develop intermediate representations, compilation/transpilation tools and optimizations, and quantum algorithm development tools
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define feature requirements and roadmaps for a full-stack quantum operation system
Work closely with our Quantum Applications Engineers, Quantum Theorists, Quantum Engineers, and Control Systems Engineers to write idiomatic, well-tested, well-documented, maintainable, and extensible code for executing experiments and algorithms on our quantum hardware

Our take

Quantum computers are largely defined by their qubit type and coherence times. Atom Computing creates spin qubits by using the neutral atom Strontium-87, which, in one of its nuclear spin states, can coherently remain in that state for a very long time, allowing computers to run deeper quantum circuits.

Qubits are fragile and susceptible to errors, but the company’s unique system yields a record-setting coherence time of 40 seconds which is monumentally faster than other systems, allowing more time for quantum error correction research to detect and correct errors without completely degrading purposeful computation.

The company raised $60 million of capital in its 2022 Series B round, and is well positioned to provide the leading quantum computing power behind life-changing breakthroughs.
