Who you are
- As a Tech Lead Manager, you are not only technically proficient but also adept at project management and people management
- You are a seasoned technology professional with a robust technical background and proven experience in leading and managing teams
- You are someone who thrives in a player-coach role, seamlessly transitioning between hands-on technical work and strategic leadership responsibilities
- Technical Expertise: You’ve 8-10+ years of software engineering experience in Java, 5+ years working on data systems and possess deep technical knowledge and skills, staying current with the latest technologies, frameworks, and best practices. Your coding skills are sharp, and you are capable of tackling complex technical challenges head-on
- Leadership Skills: You’ve 2+ years of experience leading teams building data systems, have a track record of successfully leading and mentoring teams. You understand how to motivate and develop your team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment
- Project Management: You excel in project management, with the ability to plan, execute, and deliver projects on time and within budget. Your organizational skills and attention to detail ensure that nothing falls through the cracks
- Communication: You are an effective communicator, capable of conveying technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and ensuring that your team is aligned with the company’s vision and goals
- Problem Solver: You are a strategic thinker and a problem solver, always looking for ways to improve processes and outcomes. Your analytical mindset helps you navigate complex issues and find innovative solutions
What the job involves
- When you join Onehouse, you're joining a team of passionate professionals tackling the deeply technical challenges of building a 2-sided engineering product
- Our engineering team serves as the bridge between the worlds of open source and enterprise: contributing directly to and growing Apache Hudi (already used at scale by global enterprises like Uber, Amazon, ByteDance etc) and concurrently defining a new industry category - the transactional data lake
- As an engineering leader in the Data Infrastructure team, you will create the vision for and enable the team to build and productionize the next generation of our data tech stack
- Balance a mix of people management and technical hands-on work, with an eye towards building for the long term by setting a high bar for technical design, code quality and developing our engineers into high performing, technical leaders that are skilled and excited to build the next generation data stack
- Accelerate our open source <> enterprise flywheel by working on the guts of Apache Hudi's transactional engine and optimizing it for diverse Onehouse customer workloads
- Oversee the execution of projects related to data infrastructure development, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and meet quality standards. Work closely with architects, product managers and cross-functional teams to prioritize initiatives and turn requirements into executable tasks
- Develop team governance and rituals, establish and run regular meetings to drive consensus and execution with our core India team
- Mentor junior engineers on the team by providing technical guidance and support to the team and facilitate technical discussions and decision-making processes
- Outstanding ownership of not only the area of your team, but in multiple functional areas such as data compute engines, distributed systems, and data storage systems
- Writing code, review pull requests, provide constructive feedback, and maintain high code quality standards, leading by example as an engineer at heart
- Maintain a deep understanding of data engineering principles, best practices, and emerging technologies to drive engineering initiatives that result in an elevated customer experience
- Actively participate in technical design discussions and ensure that the team is making the most effective decisions
- Hire and develop the best talent possible
- Be responsible for the growth and development of the team
- Work cross-functionally with product management leadership to drive said vision
Our take
Managing the ballooning volume of unstructured data is becoming a tough task for enterprise companies. The traditional solution, data lakes, doesn’t offer management or transaction capabilities. This lack of oversight could lead to data violations, which are becoming more costly as regulations tighten. Onehouse is catering to the growing number of businesses opting for an alternative, the so-called ‘data lakehouse’. It's a hybrid architecture that offers the management and transaction capabilities of a warehouse, with the cost-effectiveness of a data lake.
The Onehouse platform is a management plane that helps businesses set up a data lakehouse without having to invest the time and expertise in building one from scratch. With an open data format, it can be used to work with protected or sensitive data; it also allows companies to easily pull their data from Onehouse without egress fees if they decide to leave the service.
Onehouse has carved out an astute market niche for itself: businesses under increasingly close scrutiny, but with ballooning data pools, who don’t need to build out highly customized lakehouses. For the moment, this tends to be top-tier enterprises, which is how Onehouse has secured deep-pocketed clients like Walmart, Amazon, Zendesk, and Uber. As the first company to make fully managed data lakes possible, it is no surprise that it has received substantial funding. This will allow it to continue advancing the platform and grow its team to meet market demand.
