Who you are
- You are an Undergraduate student majoring in Data Science, Computer Science, or a comprehensive field
- You have excellent communication skills. You must be able to speak about the tools of your trade at an appropriate level based on your audience. Making your customer feel heard and included is critical to the long-term success of your projects
- You are curious and eager to learn. You will need to rapidly familiarize yourself with business concepts in order to translate customer requirements into actionable plans. It is likely that your projects will involve the use of new tools, technologies, and methodologies
- You have experience in some combination of traditional machine learning, agentic/generative workflows, application development, and data engineering. Nobody will be an expert in everything that our team touches; we value generalists
- You have strong feelings about design and user experience
- You understand the importance of testing and observability
What the job involves
- Part time role
- We're looking for an intern to join our Data & Analytics Platform team!
- In this role, you’ll be participating in a variety of small projects aimed at improving efficiency and decision making across our business
- Activities include automating workflows using both deterministic and generative components, building model prototypes, and enhancing platform features to support common use cases
- Working closely with people across the business to turn challenges into solutions, you will also have a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the FinTech industry
- Work with platform engineers to write, test, and deploy code that drives critical business processes
- Partner with internal customers across the business to solve problems and prototype ideas using leading automation tools, traditional machine learning, and generative model workflows
- Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and team meetings in an agile development environment
- Be a part of a strong culture of ownership, pragmatism, and testing
Our take
Many Americans with below average credit scores are caught in a bind: they're unable to improve their score, and simultaneously cannot access traditional loans. Avant's alternative is to offer credit options that are powered by machine learning and based upon a large database that helps to manage risk.
For its users, the company offers a quick credit decision and speedy access to any allotted funds. It has issued over $8 billion in loans to date, and has also expanded its business through the acquisitions of ReadyForZero in 2015 and Zero Financial in 2021.
This expansion has enabled Avant to reach towards its goal of offering a whole suite of products in a single platform, such as loans, credit cards, and deposits. Although there are many FinTechs looking at ways to remove the barriers that people with low credit scores face when trying to take out loans, this expansion to banking products should help Avant to stand out.
