Role
Who you are
- You have a breadth and depth of experience across the People agenda – from HR, to recruiting, operations and performance management, to culture and L&D
- 8+ years of HR experience in an organisation renowned for its people development in the tech sector. SaaS/database/cloud experience is a bonus
- Strong knowledge of HR best practices, employment laws, and regulations
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills
- Strategic mindset with the ability to execute and operate in the grey
- Proficiency in HRIS and other relevant best-in-class people tech stack
- Proven experience:
- Working in start-up or scale-up environments, where you have led and managed, as well as having had to roll your sleeves up and execute
- Scaling a company and people function from the UK into the US, as well
- Ability to rapidly build trust-based relationships
What the job involves
- As the Head of People, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the foundation of SurrealDB by championing our most valuable asset: our people
- You'll be our first People hire and will spearhead all aspects of human resources, from talent acquisition and employee development to fostering a vibrant company culture aligned with our core values.
- Developing and implementing SurrealDB’s People strategy
- Implementing and managing SurrealDB’s People tech stack
- Overseeing and managing all recruitment activities, including:
- SurrealDB’s employer value proposition
- Hiring roadmap
- External recruiters and agencies
- Hiring and onboarding process
- Refresh and embed SurrealDB’s performance management process, including:
- SurrealDB’s capability models/skills matrices for each function
- Coaching and feedback
- Compensation and benefits administration, including benchmarking and employee perks
- Annual review process
- Driving employee engagement and retention efforts
- Encouraging learning and development across all functions
- Defining and owning company policies and practices
- Working to differentiate and strengthen SurrealDB’s company culture
- Championing diversity, equity and inclusion to cultivate a workplace culture that values and celebrates differences
- Staying informed about People trends, best practices, and emerging technologies to continuously enhance SurrealDB’s people strategies

Our take
Though there are many businesses building software for the cloud database marketplace, various studies show that companies are now leaning towards fully managed cloud databases for their processes. SurrealDB has been operating in this the sector since 2020 and received its first round of seed funding in 2023. This is indicative of a rising need for cloud database management companies such as this.
Despite larger competitors, SurrealDB’s services have a more specific aim than just the management of databases. The mission is to improve app development by scaling down reliance on back-end APIs and layering, thus making response times to queries faster and simplifying what is often an interconnected and complicated database of servers and programmes.
The company plans to use its seed funding to onboard more employees and prep its cloud launch in 2024, hoping to expand further in the database-as-a-service industry, which is predicted to grow to a value of $24.8 billion by 2025.
