  • Experience with microcontrollers, FPGA, and embedded systems as well as power systems, control systems, and signal processing. Understanding of single board microcontrollers such as Arduino are a plus
  • Rapid prototyping from bread board to PCB with hands on experience with tools including soldering equipment, oscilloscopes, waveform generators and multimeters
  • Familiarity with SLS or resin printers as well as the ability to surface finish and assemble components are beneficial but no requirement
  • Excellent communication, leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills
  • A collaborative and self-driven mindset with the desire to innovate and the capacity to ask questions, provide new ideas or unexpected answers
  • Approaches problems with a positive attitude, a clear plan, and persistence during follow-through
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 standards
  • Proficiency in core statistical concepts, including engineering applications of DOE and control charting

Desirable

  • Creativity, accountability, and leadership with a talent to effectively brainstorm, rigorously probe novel concepts and quickly reach solutions through a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals
  • An interest in biology with a basic understanding of human physiology and common pathologies such as heart disease
  • Experience or interest in microfluidics, electro-mechanical, and/or optical systems for microscopy
  • Experience with KNIME Analytics platform and its use in signal processing, result analysis and graph generation
  • Knowledgeable in polymer synthesis, characterization, and handling
  • Experience with CNC machines including the creation of machine paths or troubleshooting hardware
  • Worked with sterile techniques or in clean room environment
  • Experience in packaging, labeling, and sterilization of medical products
  • Technical documentation expertise in risk analysis, and usability files are optional

What the job involves

  • Lead and execute electrical engineering projects from concept to production, while ensuring timely completion, quality, and budget adherence
  • Design, develop, and test stimulation infrastructure for Organ-on-a-Chip systems to depolarize cardiac and skeletal tissues during long term incubation and drug experiments
  • Code back-end instructions for stimulator and front-end user-interfaces, server logs, and result analysis tools to help biologists review stimulation parameters alongside hardware and tissue metrics with full code and architecture ownership end-to-end
  • Perform circuit design, simulation, and prototyping of waveform generators and execute small batch manufacturing
  • Monitor performance, troubleshoot electrical issues, and implement corrective actions on existing system architecture including servers, incubators, and microscopes
  • Guide and mentor colleagues while providing technical support and training as subject matter expert for electrical engineering
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (mechanical, software, and biology) to ensure seamless project execution
  • Collect requirements from users in tissue production prior to product development and document their changes throughout the lifecycle of completed systems
  • Author and maintain design history files to document product development, compose tests reports during the evaluate of prototypes, and write standard operating procedures prior to batch production
  • Qualify, on-board, and manage external vendors as well as consultants for a robust supply chain of consumables and custom-made parts, on time
  • Request quotes, negotiates competitive pricing to source materials, tooling, and supplies from external vendors
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and potential regulatory requirements
  • Contribute to intellectual property development, patent applications, and research initiatives

Our take

Drug development is a critical component of health care. Reducing costs, improving discovery processes, and accelerating drug development are all critical to success in the drug pipeline. Using human-centric data and ML-anchored computation, Valo Health’s integrated drug development platform, known as Opal, improves outcomes in drug development, by leveraging advanced data analysis.

Drug development entails a variety of steps including molecule discovery, clinical development, and target discovery. With the vast amount of data that is generated, a system like Opal incentivizes investment in outcomes that are more likely to correspond with effective treatments. This reduces the number and expense of clinical trials needed to demonstrate drug effectiveness.

There are a variety of competitors in the data-driven drug discovery field, including insitro, Atomwise, and Exscietia, but this vast market should still offer enough space for Valo Health to grow. In 2021, the company experienced a set-back in the surprise calling off of a merger that would have seen it go public, but despite this has continued to operate well and advance towards its goal of transforming the drug development process.
