Who you are
- The optimal candidate should have equivalent or better experience as a Senior Software Engineer, and should have at least two years of experience as an Engineering Manager
- Ideally, the candidate will also have at least five years of experience working on teams in the game industry
- To be successful in this role you will have a passion for games, outstanding process skills, awesome people skills, a high level of integrity, great technical depth, and a strong desire to build successful engineering teams
- B.Sc. in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent education / work experience
- 2+ Years experience as an Engineering Manager
- 5+ Years industry experience as a Software Engineer
- Good working knowledge in C# and/or Golang
- Solid foundation in data structures, algorithms and software methodologies
- Prior game development experience (on shipped titles or live games experience)
- Excellent communication skills and comfort working in a collaborative environment
- Ability to build, manage, mentor and lead a team of engineers
- Able to work collaboratively with engineering stakeholders including design, user experience, product and analytics teams
Desirable
- Experience with git
- Mobile development experience with a focus on iOS and/or Android
- Experience in both C# and Golang, or similar programming language
- Server experience is a plus; for example, web service integration, application server performance, relational databases or data analytics
- AWS infrastructure experience
- Live Operations work experience
What the job involves
- Zynga is looking for an Engineering Manager in Austin, and more specifically, someone whose experience can allow them to both manage engineers as a lead, as well as execute on coding tasks
- We have a well-rounded, and tight-knit, distributed team with a healthy mix of engineering skill levels, and are looking to strengthen our team in tackling the challenges of running and extending a Live game
- Our mission is to “Connect the World through Games” by building a truly social experience that makes the world a better place
- You would have an opportunity to lead a pod of engineers on the team, while also contributing to user-facing features (including UI / UX) and game engine systems, plus help solve challenging problems for high profile titles
- Manage a pod of engineers on the team on a daily basis, both in their tasks as well as morale, career growth and future planning
- Assist with feature & systems implementation (and bugs) in Unity with C# and/or Golang
- Help to define and scope out tasks, systems, and timelines
- Help to review and contribute to engineering architectures
- Help to monitor and improve engineering process
Our take
Zynga is a games developer that rode Facebook's platform to success back in the late noughties and early 2010's. It is now one of the biggest casual game producers globally, with a presence across 175 countries and regions and over 80 million monthly active users.
Though the company hit a number of roadblocks after its initial success - such as falling stock prices, and numerous calls it was copying other games - its subsequent resurgence is proof of its staying power. It continues to use social media as a distribution channel, and boasts titles such as FarmVille, Merge Dragons! and Words With Friends.
Future success will lie in the company's continued investment in building viral games that people love. It will also need to attune to the social media waves and keep track of where users can be found, as the landscape has become more mobile. Notable recent activity includes a collaboration with BBC Earth ahead of 2024's Earth day, and grant to develop actionable push notifications that enable gameplay without entering the application.
