Role

Who you are

  • 9+ years of software development experience with a minimum of 5 years experience working within payments
  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree, preferably in CS, or equivalent experience
  • Experience leading design, implementation, and deployment of one or more high scale, cross-functional payment systems
  • Experience driving initiatives that span across teams or departments
  • Ability to work independently while showing being able to deliver production ready code with minimal guidance
  • Deep understanding of async programming models (events, callbacks, promises, async/await)
  • Experience with Java
  • Experience with relational databases and caching solutions
  • Experience in designing APIs and building RESTful services
  • Experience with message queuing, data streaming, and workflow frameworks
  • Experience with distributed system and service-oriented architecture
  • Experience with Agile software development and Agile software solutions

What the job involves

  • As a Staff Software Engineer on the Payments Processing team, your mission is to design and build a payments gateway platform that is fast and easy to integrate with, reliable for money movements, smart to route our business cost-effectively, resilient to any external processor downtime in any market, and accurate for Financial reporting
  • We’re looking for engineers who are independent, thoughtful, creative, and passionate about building the best payment gateway platform. As a Staff Engineer, you will:
  • Critical to make technical decisions
  • Provide technical guidance for engineers and teams
  • Advise on architecture and propose solutions to payment problems that span multiple teams and organizations
  • Consult on the performance, scalability, architecture, reliability, testability and engineering best practices of payment gateway systems
  • Lead a cross-team group of engineers and partner with product, data, finance, operations to push the boundaries of what payments gateway platform can support
  • A Typical Day:
  • Lead a group of 5-8 engineers to design and build our next generation of service-oriented-architecture gateway platform, making the processor integration simple, fast, flexible, and robust
  • Design and build a platform that has strong redundancy function and is processor agnostic for compliance, vaulting, and transaction processing
  • Partner with Design and Product to innovate and lead new initiatives to improve our orchestrations, anomaly detections, payin and payout qualities
  • Collaborate with Partnerships and Product teams to define Airbnb’s payment scorecard and operational process

Our take

When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.

Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.

Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
