Who you are
- We are looking for a person who leads with humility, curiosity, and purpose
- Someone with clarity of thought, an ability to integrate and analyze a great deal of information, the inspiration to spark new ideas, and the organizational skills to oversee multiple complex and concurrent projects
- The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience in data at startups with meaningful scale
- This is a managerial role but also requires deep technical expertise in the data engineering/science/analytics realm
- Hands-on experience with complex relational datasets; you’ve encountered databases with hundreds of tables and limited documentation, and aren’t intimidated. Between experimenting yourself and striking up conversation with others across the company, you’ve never met a Postgres (or Snowflake) instance you didn’t like
- Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional stakeholders; you’re able to prioritize competing requests effectively by leveraging a strong fundamental understanding of the business environment you’re operating in
- Knowledge and enthusiasm for emerging trends in the data analytics space; you try new tools and are comfortable evaluating open source platforms, vendor pitches, etc
- Demonstrated managerial acumen; you’ve built a team before, are comfortable hiring and developing folks with a wide variety of experience profiles
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; you’re comfortable making a presentation to the leadership team as well as documenting processes for your teammates
What the job involves
- As the Director, Data Insights & Engineering, you will sit inside our core technology organization, but serve cross-functional stakeholders across the business including the executive team
- Lead the applied data science, engineering, & analytics function at Mudflap, supporting key decisions across product development, marketing, risk, and finance
- Hire and mentor world-class talent, primarily data analysts, engineers, and scientists
- Drive process improvements to improve both the quality and quantity of insights we are able to deliver
- Drive best practices around experiment design and implementation around the company to enable rapid testing and learning
- Work closely with product engineering leadership to evolve our data pipelines, warehouse, and related systems to facilitate accurate and efficient delivery of insights
- Act as a thought partner for data-savvy individuals located outside of the core data team
- Exhibit enthusiasm about sharing and adopting best practices with your team
- Be flexible--you understand the needs of a startup
- Be detail-oriented, a fast learner, and scrappy
Our take
Owner-operators make up 9% of the truckers on the road, in other words 680,000 small businesses forming the backbone of the U.S’s crucial trucking industry. However, only big fleets get major fuel discounts because they have large gallon volumes, leaving these self-employed truckers to pay full price.
Mudflap is bringing those savings to owner-operators & small fleets. When drivers sign up for the app, they join tens of thousands of users which Mudflap then leverages to drive sales for truck stops which offer discounts on fuel in return. It’s a smart model which massively simplifies the process for earning discounts compared to the old route of a fuel card which requires a credit check.
Stop managers could be sceptical about working with mobile payments in return for a promise of increased demand. However, the company provides its entire network with a Mudflap tablet through which to handle all payment transactions within the network, making it easy for whoever is behind the counter.
