Who you are
- We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Payin Platform team in London, United Kingdom
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in backend development, with a focus on building scalable and reliable systems
- Strong proficiency in backend programming languages such as Java, Python, or Go
- Extensive experience with distributed systems and microservices architecture
- In-depth knowledge of database systems, including both SQL and NoSQL databases
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and their associated services
- Expertise in designing and implementing RESTful APIs
- Experience with version control systems, preferably Git
- Strong understanding of payment systems and financial transactions
- Knowledge of security best practices for handling sensitive financial data
- Familiarity with payment industry regulations and compliance requirements
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Experience with agile development methodologies
- Relevant certifications in cloud platforms or payment systems are a plus
What the job involves
- In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the core backend systems that power our cutting-edge payment platform
- You will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, scalable, and secure solutions that meet the evolving needs of our global customer base
- Design and implement high-performance, scalable backend services for our payment platform
- Collaborate with product managers and frontend engineers to define and implement new features
- Optimize existing systems for improved efficiency, reliability, and performance
- Develop and maintain RESTful APIs for integration with internal and external systems
- Implement security measures to protect sensitive financial data and ensure compliance with industry regulations
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to the team's technical decision-making process
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in production environments
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the team's knowledge sharing initiatives
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends in backend development and payment systems

Our take
Wise started when the two founders realised they would be better off trading Estonian kroons for British pounds (and vice versa) between themselves rather than going through banks. That was back in 2011, and they've since grown Wise into one of Europe's most successful tech businesses, exchanging billions of currency every month.
Wise rapidly grew by solving a significant problem for customers, who lost too much money to banks when exchanging currency. Its attracted investment from some of the best investors in the world, from Andreesen Horowitz to Index Ventures and even Richard Branson.
While the market is crowded with new entrants (think Revolut and Monzo) and traditional banks trying to catch up, Wise is still staying one step ahead having recently opened a new hub in India and new payment features as well as reporting a rise in key metrics on higher volume and customer growth. This continued growth positions the company well for continued success in the future.
