Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional with a proven track record of architecting and building external developer platforms and developing API-powered third-party integrations
- Your commitment to the customer experience and strong ownership of the quality and integrity of your squad’s work sets a high standard for the squad
- Working closely with Engineering, Product Management, Design, and Product Marketing, you will be crucial in making informed product decisions, building exceptional products, and achieving significant business outcomes
- Your dedication to developing scalable, performant, and maintainable systems goes hand in hand with creating a motivating environment for everyone to excel in their work
- Experience building and maintaining integrations with third-party APIs
- Experience building and scaling external-facing API products
- Experience shipping high-impact and complex initiatives
- Strong proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Go). Experience in Elixir is a plus
- CS Foundations: Ability to make sound decisions and tradeoffs in design and implementation, appropriately anticipating scale, maintenance, and overall operational feasibility of solutions
- Strong Communicator: Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. You know your audience and can communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborative: Deep partnership with your product, design, and marketing counterparts, constantly collaborating to ensure we progress towards the desired outcomes, maintaining healthy engagement with peers and stakeholders across R&D for cross-functional initiatives
- Ownership: Able to lead large initiatives and roadmaps by partnering with Product, Design, and other stakeholders to define and scope smaller deliverables that yield incremental value to the business and customers
- Autonomy: Ability to move things forward in the face of ambiguity, operating effectively in decision-making while clearly articulating risks, trade-offs, and ensuring proper visibility to key stakeholders and the squad
- Technical & Leadership Skills: You have a balance of both technical and leadership strengths. You guide sound technical decisions within the squad, as well as empower your team to autonomously create significant impact
- Forward Thinker: Demonstrated ability to set strategy for evolving systems to best support long-term objectives while still delivering incremental value in the now
What the job involves
- Boulevard customers are extremely passionate about what they do, and their needs can be incredibly nuanced and critical
- They rely on us to stand alongside them, so they can focus on what they do best
- As the Engineering Lead on the newly established Platforms and Integrations team, you will help meet the functional needs of our customers through defining and executing on our integrations strategy
- This is a green field opportunity where you will not only solve customer needs by building integrations, but also shape the trajectory of our external developer platform and broader apps/integrations ecosystem
- Moreover, you will be building robust platform foundations, such as account security, identity management, audit trail capabilities, and eventing infrastructure
- This is a highly visible role in a space that is extremely important for our customers, and mission critical for the business
- Lead and manage the 3-5 person squad (~40%) while contributing hands-on as a Staff SWE (~60%)
- Strategic planning and execution, ensuring alignment with the company’s vision and objectives
- Own and lead the technical architecture and implementation of Boulevard’s API ecosystem to power our app ecosystem
- Own and lead the technical architecture and implementation of Boulevard’s integrations with Shopify, etc
- Establish and monitor system health metrics, implementing strategies to exceed targets
- Champion the maintenance of an observable, secure, and efficient codebase, addressing technical debt proactively to ensure the platform’s reliability and performance
- Participate in Incident Commander on-call rotation, where you will lead incident response by guiding the response towards resolution, communicating to stakeholders, and identifying post-incident improvements

Boulevard addresses the challenges of spas and hairdressers by designing software that makes it easier to automate workflows, scheduling, and pricing, helping drive customers through their doors.
The global spa and salon market is expected to reach a market size in excess of $215 billion by 2026. Traditionally, appointment-based businesses are heavily reliant on paperwork and receptionists, but Boulevard is looking to modernise the industry by helping drive efficiencies, profit, and better customer experience.
Boulevard is one in a sea of companies offering software to digitizing appointment-based businesses. However, the substantial funding it has raised across multiple rounds demonstrates that it has maintained traction in the market as it grows, with investment cited to go towards hiring talent and building more tools to reach a wider set of users. To bolster its offering in a competitive marketplace, Boulevard launched Boulevard Capital in 2024, a growth funding platform for businesses that use its booking software.
