Role
Who you are
- BS or advanced degree in computer science or applicable experience
- 3-5 years experience of software development experience working on software applications
- Solid experience working with a language such as Go, Java, C, or C++ (Go experience is a plus)
- Working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
- Positivity; non-dogmatic, team-first attitude
- Flexibility; someone who is responsive and comfortable with ambiguity
- Experience designing and implementing scalable solutions; an understanding of design patterns, database design, and testing best practices
- Disciplined approach to software design and development and ability to work on features independently (accurately forecast delivery milestones and work with stakeholders to ensure that expectations are met)
- Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including schema design, SQL tuning, and database monitoring
- Working knowledge of GraphQL, open source APIs, CI and CD pipeline, AWS platform, Docker, and Kubernetes a plus
- Experience using GenAI tools to efficiently deliver high quality production software is a plus

- The Engineering team at SmithRx is developing the next-generation modern pharmacy benefits management (PBM) platform that will change how companies administer and manage pharmacy benefits
- Our unified technology platform provides real-time actionable insights that drives cost savings, powers clinical services and results in a brilliant customer experience
- A unified technology platform exists nowhere in the pharmacy benefit ecosystem to programmatically solve widespread deficiencies
- The result is a PBM delivering unmatched service quality and operational efficiencies that exceeds all industry standards
- As a Software Engineer, you will play a key role in the entire engineering lifecycle from design/build/test to maintaining our SmithRx product suite
- You will contribute to best practices/methodologies, coding standards and large-scale system design perspectives to our team
- We need our engineers to be versatile and driven, display leadership and ownership qualities, and be enthusiastic to take on new challenges across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward
- Focus on our back-end and front-end codebase; designing, developing and maintaining SmithRx product features using various languages such as Golang, GraphQL, SQL, React, JavaScript/Typescript, Node, and Java (amongst others), while leveraging full CI and CD to iterate quickly
- Collaborate with stakeholders and technical leads to understand functional and technical requirements to produce high-quality, scalable software and services
- Provide scope and risk estimates for system and feature builds by building technical design documentation
- Apply software development best practices, design patterns, tools and technologies
- Leverage client and server-based frameworks, like GraphQL, React, and GORM, when appropriate to extend the needs of our platform
- Leverage AWS technologies, like Lambda and Fargate, to handle various types of jobs and batch processing
- Ensure that the code is fully tested end-to-end, has the desired level of code coverage, and that the features are well documented
- Troubleshoot production issues by performing triages for issues that arise, assessing the impact, creating and executing a plan for short-term and long-term mitigation, and performing root cause analysis to prevent future occurrence of issues
- Contribute to a collaborative learning culture through code reviews, the exploration of new technologies, and other innovations
- Actively seek out new AI tools and technologies and share them with the team to positively impact overall software delivery speed and quality
Our take
PBMs (Pharmacy Benefit Managers) save payers and patients 40% to 50% on prescription drug and related medical costs in the US, compared to what they would spend without them. It’s generally accepted, though, that PBMs are working for profit and not solely on the customers benefit.
SmithRx is a company looking to reduce complications in the current system with its innovative PBM structure. It uses its cloud-based technology to present the most cost effective options transparently to self-insured businesses, supporting them in getting the lowest cost drugs they can, as well as making the transition to these alternatives seamless.
It does this by partnering with innovative drug companies, as well as applying coupons and making use of available savings and assistance programs. As the company does not take economics from the supply chain, it is able to work for its customers with no hidden agendas. And with significant growth, cost savings, customer satisfaction, and market traction in 2024, the company is very much on track for continued success.
