Role
Who you are
- You pride yourself on your writing. You’ll have to write relatively technical experiment proposals that can be read by a broad audience and regular write-ups for weekly rituals. Your writing must be clear and should be able to survive a high level of scrutiny
- You can analyse a dataset forever. We’ll expect you to dive deep into the mechanics of customer behaviour and reveal powerful, actionable insights about our marketplace. Folks who excel at this always have 10x more questions to ask. We’ll expect you to learn SQL if you don’t already know it
- You focus on delivering value, fast. You’ll be the CEO of your own work. That means prioritising ruthlessly to ensure that your work delivers tangible value to customers. A lot of times, this means using answers you already have to deploy customer solutions instead of continuing to analyse
- You know probability theory. You’ll have to think deeply about second order marketplace effects on a regular basis. Thinking about the odds of an event happening and how to change those odds will be a regular exercise. You’ll also have to express those odds logically
- You don’t do incremental work. We have a lot of interesting problems, so it’s easy to find ones that deliver clear, but little value. You’d rather focus on thinking about big problems in entirely new ways than focus on small problems
- You can do the math. We stay away from plug-and-play models if we can’t write the math and explain exactly how they’re working. Our ability to use progressively complex ML models is proportional to our first-principles mathematical understanding of our marketplace
- You have a high sense of ownership and thrive in ambiguity
- B.A., M.A. or PhD in a quantitative discipline, like mathematics, computer science, statistics, or engineering, or equivalent quantitative experience
- Experience programming, ideally with Python. Javascript experience is helpful
- Deep understanding of probability theory, algorithm design, and data structures
- Ideally, you understand Markov Chains, Bayesian belief networks, and other probabilistic models, and have knowledge of a broad range of computational algorithms, from depth first search to Q-learning
- 1+ years of experience in a high-growth environment is preferred but not required. New graduates are welcome
What the job involves
- Identify opportunities to improve the marketplace experience using pricing by knitting together data and customer conversations
- Iterate on experiment proposals that make first-principles arguments to tackle important problems with creative policies. We don’t use plug and play machine learning models
- Be expected to write all the math that you use
- Deploy and monitor experiments using our Python-based experimentation infrastructure and iterate on our infrastructure on a regular basis
- Own problems all the way through. This includes talking to customers, analysing data, creating data models, designing solutions, experimenting, iterating, and working with the engineering team to implement them at scale
- Present the results of implemented policies and their impact on the business to a cross-functional group of executives including the COO and Head of Product on a weekly basis and launch them systemwide
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to tackle pricing related issues, including customer concerns
Our take
The American healthcare system has been going through a staffing crisis for nurses for quite some time. Staff burnout, an ageing workforce, and the lure of better flexible working conditions via nursing agencies has meant nurse churn is high, and the supply of new graduates filling the breach is dwindling. Clipboard Health’s Uber-like service for nursing staff might prove an astute cure.
Healthcare facilities can post available shifts on Clipboard Health’s digital platform, and nurses can sign up on an ad-hoc, no-commitment basis. This means hospitals get the professional bodies they need in the room, and nurses can better adjust their schedules around what their circumstances require - be that childcare commitments, or periods of psychological recuperation.
Clipboard Health is, therefore, far more operationally complex than rival nursing recruitment sites like Incredible Health or HealthStaff Solutions, which go down the more traditional route of offering permanent job listings - and this is to their credit. The answer to increasing burnout isn’t to offer more employment, but instead to fundamentally change the nature of the employment on the table. In this way, Clipboard Health might be making real strides on an important issue. And investors like Sequoia Capital seem to think so at least, with investment in Clipboard Health surpassing $94 million as of 2023's second quarter.
