Role
Who you are
- 5 years working in a People/HR function and 1-2 years in an HR Business Partner role, experience working in Technology, specifically supporting Engineering is a plus
- Demonstrated sound judgment, and the ability to negotiate critical situations appropriately, with poise, under difficult circumstances
- Knowledge of basic U.S. employment law (ie: FMLA and ADA)
- Experience working in a dynamic, constantly evolving business with corporate functions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail and organization
- You can effectively strike the right balance of being an advisor to the business but also an advocate for employees
- Ability to negotiate complex and confidential situations with confidence and finesse
- Experience working with Corporate teams is a plus
- You have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- A trust in and commitment to Etsy’s vision, mission and core values
What the job involves
- Identify and handle employee relations issues quickly and sensitively, exercising good judgment and discretion, and partner with our Employee Relations and Employment Counsel teams, as appropriate
- Build strong trusted relationships and credibility across all levels of management
- Coach managers on performance management, feedback, employee development and career pathing
- Be a resource for individual contributors across the teams you support
- Work with the other HRBP’s and members of the broader People team to help roll out various Etsy wide People programs and initiatives, such as, Etsy’s performance management, talent, compensation and internal mobility processes
- Collaborate closely with our HR partner teams to support business line priorities
- Support the Senior Manager, HR Business Partner on organizational design, hiring and compensation decisions
- Synthesize insights and observations from across the organization to identify improvement areas in HR processes and propose solutions for addressing them
- Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law
Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
