About 60 billion chickens are reared for meat annually, but even under the best farming conditions their welfare is not good. The most dedicated farms might have walkthroughs to check on the flock once or twice a day, and in that time chickens can become ill or injured.
FLOX aims to improve the welfare of chickens with an AI platform that uses to computer vision, automated alerts and analytics to watch the flock at all times, alerting farmers as soon as an incident occurs allowing an immediate response. The platform also yields a huge amount of data for farmers who can use the insights gained for accurate planning and decision making.
Since its founding in 2018, FLOX has gone operational in 10 commercial sheds, including those run by the UK's largest poultry producer. It has also raised a significant amount of funding including from DEFRA's Farming Innovation Programme, which is being used to build a scalable industrial demonstrator system and to further develop the platform.
