Who you are
- 5+ years of related experience in Communications, Public Relations
- Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, English or related field
- You are familiar with anime, fandom communities, pop culture, current entertainment
- You're able to focus and sculpt communications (spoken and written) to best meet our needs
- You know your way around Google Suite, specifically Docs, Slides, Sites, and Sheets; hands-on experience using project managements systems such as Airtable and Wrike are a bonus
- Your role could involve domestic and international travel
What the job involves
- The Communications Manager, Announcements and Crunchyroll News plays an important role in our communications strategy, coordinating between the Communications, Audience Development, Brand Management, Title Marketing, Editorial & Publishing and Crunchyroll News teams
- Reporting to our Vice President of Communications, you will collaborate with teams to coordinate global announcements and news processes while standing up publicity for the News team and brand, promoting exclusive stories, working with the News team on appearances, pitching stories, and contributing to new initiatives
- In this new position, we are looking for someone with an editorial news vision to coordinate a virtual newsroom of sorts
- You will manage press announcements for the global Marketing team (Communications, Title Marketing, Audience Development, Regional Marketing and Brand Management) by coordinating, organizing, and prioritizing tasks through precise project management
- You will work with global teams on best practices and improving strategy, identifying areas to improve announcements workflows, and implementing solutions tailored to multiple team goals
- You will map out publicity strategy for Crunchyroll News and other original social media content initiatives, including promoting important editors/journalists, major stories/news/features, using staff to tell the anime and/or Crunchyroll narrative and new News initiatives
- You will develop a cadence of information readouts for global team, including weekly and daily alerts for planning purpose
- You will stay updated on anime news from Japan, track media coverage, and follow industry trends
- We are considering applicants for our Culver City, CA and San Francisco, CA offices

In recent decades, anime - encompassing Japanese, Korean, and Chinese animation 0 has transitioned from a niche interest to a formidable industry, boasting a global market worth approximately $30B. Despite this growth, distribution has historically posed challenges, with series and films often reaching overseas audiences through disparate channels, if at all. Crunchyroll emerged to address this issue by consolidating the largest collection of anime into a single streaming service.
Sony's acquisition of Crunchyroll in 2021 for $1.75B expanded the platform's reach, integrating Sony's extensive animation library into its offerings. this move also positioned Crunchyroll for heightened competition against streaming giant Netflix, known for its substantial investments in anime production and acquisition. Currently, Crunchyroll maintains an unrivaled library of anime content, boasting over 44,000 episodes that have attracted over 0M paying subscribers.
While Crunchyroll initially offered a free, ad-supported tier to its vast community, it appears poised to phase out this option, transitioning to a subscription-based model for all new series. Despite this shift, the platform has implemented a global reduction in fees to stimulate subscription uptake. The success of this strategy remains to be seen, but past experiences with companies like Hulu suggest that it may drive subscription growth and mitigate piracy
