Role
Who you are
- Your academic background is in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Economics or Physics. Advanced degree preferred
- You have 8+ years of experience working in an analytical role
- You have customer facing experience and you enjoy sitting with the customers to understand their challenges
- You have a strong knowledge of relational databases, (e.g. SQL)
- You have proven experience with at least one programming language (Python preferred) and are comfortable developing code in a team environment (e.g. git, notebooks, testing)
- You have a strong experience building scalable data and analytics products from design to deployment phases
- You think about data in terms of statistical distributions and have a big enough analytics toolbox to know how to find patterns in data and identify targets for performance
- You are delivery-oriented and you are experience in a face-paced environment
- You have excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience in influencing decisions with information
- You have a high tolerance for ambiguity. You find a way through. You anticipate. You connect and synthesize

By leveraging blockchain data, threat intelligence, and advanced analytics, our products empower governments, financial institutions, and crypto businesses to combat illicit activity and global security threats
- At TRM, you'll join a mission-driven, fast-paced team made up of experts in law enforcement, data science, engineering, and financial intelligence, tackling complex global challenges daily
- Whether analyzing blockchain data, developing cutting-edge tools, or collaborating with global organizations, you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impact
- As a Senior Data Scientist, you will have end-to-end ownership of critical analytics products for TRM’s customers
- In collaboration with a highly skilled team of engineers, data scientists, research scientists and go-to-market teams, your goal will be to uncover valuable and defensible information that can be used to detect, prevent, and mitigate cryptocurrency fraud and financial crime
- Lead the implementation of new advanced analytics products that allow our customers to explore and uncover hidden insights through complex blockchain data such as assessing the risk of DeFi services, stablecoins, global regulations and other crypto-trends
- Lead the roadmap and prioritisation of the analytics customer products suite based on market demands
- Use your high-level business acumen to collaborate with our go-to-market team and work directly with our customers to understand their challenges and pain points in order to creatively translate them into impactful models and products
- Develop complex statistical analysis, algorithms, and interactive visualizations that will be consumed by former FBI, Secret Service, and Europol agents and analysts to detect new threat vectors unique to cryptocurrencies and blockchains
- Collaborate with engineers and research scientists to design algorithms to analyze complex data structures inherent to cryptocurrencies and blockchains. This will involve working with distributed ledger technologies, cryptographic protocols, and transactional data to uncover suspicious activities
- As a leader in the team, you will collaborate closely with engineers, data scientists, and research scientists to align on project goals, methodologies, and deliverables. You will communicate your findings and insights effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Develop your skills through exceptional training as well as frequent coaching and mentoring from colleagues
- Establish best practices and statistical rigor around data-driven decision-making
- As a globally distributed team, members may observe different timezones. However, most of the team will overlap between the hours of 7am-12pm PST for meetings and collaboration
- The team is involved in 2 different on-calls
- Analytics on-call: only requires focus on working time (average of < 1 hour a day every month)
- Data Science on-call: full week on-call to ensure Data Science pipelines are running smoothly (average of 1-2 hours a day every 3 months)
- Deliver a last-minute impactful project for a key customer
- Build complex products effectively with tight timeframes (1-2 sprints for MVP)
- Work on several projects in parallel with different priorities and stakeholders

Our take
The crypto space has become more mainstream but it is also intensely volatile and poorly regulated, with a high degree of anonymity afforded to its users. As such it has become a major source of financial fraud with $20 billion in crypto stolen in 2022 alone. TRM Lab exists to return trust to the blockchain, helping banks, government agencies and crypto companies detect and combat fraud with its blockchain intelligence solutions.
As the risk of blockchain fraud is only increasing, with the proceeds often being used for organized crime, there are a number of companies working in this space. TRM stands out with the breadth of its crypto asset coverage and the strength of its cross-chain analytics. It has partnered with the FBI and Europol to aid its investigations, and is also used by major crypto companies MoonPay and Binance.
The company has grown its revenue by almost 500% year on year since its founding in 2018, and has raised a significant amount of capital. With the funding its secured, its further developing its product and hiring additional talent. And as businesses and government agencies increasingly come to grips with fraud in the crypto space, TRM is well poised to continue its rapid growth.
